2 tone car paint

I know how to apply two colors to an object by selecting the appropriate faces, but what I’d like to know is if there is a way to apply two colors to an object without following faces. I know it has to do with image mapping a texture, but how do you get the shape you want and locate it where you want on the surface???
Here’s an example of what I mean, it’s a factory paint scheme on a Mach 1 mustang hood. Any info is greatly appreciated, or link to a tutorial…anything.
Thanks!

you need to learn UV mapping

as far as i know there are 2 basic technique for giving a color to an object:

  • textures
  • vertex paint/coloring the vertex

the vertex painting is usually avoided because is really too expensive and does not looks so good, it’s also very complicated to manage.

the textures are the only way to make a model look good.

Yeah unwrap the hood and pake a texture that has black and combine it.

If you are using cycles I have made a tutorial on that: http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?245468
