We need a short animation to visualize the working principle of a special coffee tamper. The rough idea can be glimpsed from this sketch:

The animation needs to show how a very soft body (gelpad) pressed onto a pile of fine powder (coffee grounds) inside a fixed container (coffee sieve) interacts with and shapes the powder.
Both the gelpad and the powder will get deformed considerably. The process is slow, so dynamics don’t play a role here. A very simple approach would model both bodies (pad and powder) as soft elastic bodies. However, here is the catch: the powder is highly compressible and its shear stiffness changes dramatically with density (it gets much, much stiffer when compressed to the point where it hardly moves at all). This shear stiffness is a local property depending on local density, so it cannot change uniformly within the whole body of powder.
We think a simulating approach is suited best here, to capture the details. However, the visualization does not need to be physically correct. The task at hand is to show the main characteristics in a convincing and easy to understand way.
The final animation can be 3D or 2D, whatever works best to transport the idea for interested laymen.
