2048 normal bake?

Is it possible to bake out a normal from a high poly mesh to a low poly one, that is 2048x2048?
THe highest I can get is 1024x1024

It’s definitely possible. I baked a 8192x8192 once just to see if I could.

What exactly isn’t working about 2048^2?

The problem is that when I create a new image in the UV editor, at 2048X 2048, after I bake the normal the normal map appears on a random map. Not the map that I created specifically for it to use.

What is a decent way of going about making 2048x2 normal and AO maps?

You may want to check out the blender wiki, it explains quite a lot of stuff and has helped me in the past; http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:Manual/Render/Bake

A recent tuorial referenced to on blendernation has a section on normal maps: http://www.blendernation.com/2009/07/25/realtime-stone-with-detail-maps-in-blender/

I have just watched it and it uses normal maps at 2048.

Another tutorial would be: http://cg.tutsplus.com/tutorials/game-art/sculpt-model-and-texture-a-low-poly-skull-in-blender/

I hope it helps.
