2d Cutout Style Tutorials *UPDATED* 7/07/08

Hey jazzDalek,

Are you still working on any tutorials using this 2d style, I’m interested in keeping this thread going.

Also the tutorial links are dead!

Thanks

Hi jazzdalek,

thanx a lot for these tutorials. Very cool stuff. I like your style, too.

Best wishes, FRitz

hey burns & fritzman, thanks! I think I fixed the tutorial links. I’ve been re-doing my
blender projects website and finishing a short 2d animation done in blender. So I haven’t had time to write any new tutorials. you can check out my production log here:
www.pdxblender.org

it’s going a lot slower than I had hoped. but hopefully I’ll be done soon.

Jazzdalek your animation looks excellent! very stylish

please keep us updated.

Wow, I’m very impressed with the last few tests you posted on your site. I was thinking about ways to do 2d animation for a music video I was asked to do but kinda abandoned the idea for a while. However, after seeing this, I feel very excited and I think I might go ahead and do it in blender. Thanks for the inspiration!

IMO tho, using DOF (mentioned in your blog) would kinda ruin the effect you achieved in your test. I wouldn’t change a thing.

can’t find your tutorial on your website… Could you put it back because I’m very interested… thx

Schweet! I’m going to check these out. I don’t use Illustrator much - do I need to have it to follow the tutorials?
In response to Deltawing’s comment, you’re right, here’s a page that talks about what goes on at South Park Studios:

Thanks Jazzdalek.

I checked out the tutorials. Great info! Interesting format too, that Wink. I like how you have the option to skip ahead and how it pauses for you at each text blurb. Also the picture is much clearer than other formats.
Wasn’t able to download the .zip file from the “Assets” link though.
Jazzdalek, those renders on your site are beautiful. Hope you can provide a tutorial on lighting such cutout scenes at some point.

Now the search is on for Adobe Illustrator…
On second thought, Inkscape is looking pretty good. May as well support the open-source tools.

Will 2D take less time in render then 3D?

I love the style and the speed of work flow this method has.

Are character generated this way suitable to import into XNA/Direct X projects as animated game characters?

Cheers.

Hi ppl,
In Moho, we can had Frame-by-frame animation to the projects,
can we do that with Blender ? I didnt knew anyone else were
using Moho, or even thinking about using Blender as “Moho”,
or cut-out animation plataform, I knew it was possible but
didnt knew how. I’m really greatfull for this information, thanks!

My question is, is it possible to change “cut out parts”, or
in this case, objects, in a model fully rigged, to do small
changes in the cut-out animation, such as Head-turns, some
leg/body movements ? - Frame by frame animation, actually,
in some way…

Thanks for your atention!

Hello Heldrida-
wow, i’m happy you like the tutorials and the thread. I am also a big fan of Moho/Anime Studio and use it for work.

The Question you are asking about is called “Replacement Animation” The answer to your question is, Yes! But it’s not something that’s built into blender out of the box. You can do it with a small python script. It’s bit tricky to understand, so I am planning to write a tutorial covering Replacement animation as soon as I can. Work is keeping me very busy right now, so I just haven’t had time to really work on a new tutorial… or finish my short film. Hopefully soon. I will keep you posted. You can check out this thread on the subject…
I even posted the python script I’m using for replacement animation. But it would be tough for me to explain to you how to use it right now. In fact I’m even having problems with a few concepts my self right now. But once I figure out a smooth easy to understand work flow I will make a tutorial and let everyone know.

Hi jazzdalek,

Watched your Tutes - thanks for these. From them I started doodling with some - what I call 2.5D stuff. Slightly 3D by minor extrusion

By the way can you extrude with curves in blender beyond the 5 - why is this restricted?

I have no idea why it’s restricted but use can extrude further by adding a TaperOb.

Hi All,
Further additions to the above cartoonee scene:

Added the face from a shot of the Singer. Guitar added also. Eventual idea - a music vid for one of our tracks.

Hi Schioler,

I had similar problems like you with my scene above. I am using ver 2.43 of Blender. BUT
ME THINKS its a bug of some sort.

Try this - this part works:

open new blender scene, press 5 and 7 [ top view ] on the numpad, import the .ai star, [ may have to zoom out to see it ], ‘S’ to scale it to whatever size you like - now the one step not mentioned by Jazzdalek is - PRESS CTRL + A [ if you are on windows, not sure on other op sys ] - this is apply scale and rotation, apply it. Now extrude. The extrusion should work in the right direction at this point and capped.

Now for the bug part:

delete the star you just created, leave blender open and reimport the .ai star again, zoom out and note that this time the centre of the star has no ‘shading’. NOW, if you try and do the above procedure the star is not capped as is your issue. To sort this close Blender, open again run through the above procedure again and all is well. You reckon thats a bug? Blender seems to hold settings when left open in this case. I have found same where I have imported an .ai into an already opened blender and ended up with double version of it stuck together.

Also when you import in an .ai blender seems to create a .obj of your curve in the folder you use for your project. Not related to this problem it seems. Deleting it doesnt do much.

Cheers
Aidan

In rendering will this talke less time then 3D?

You need to hit the C-Key to close the curve.
