2D in a Render

Specifically, I want a 2D image as the background when I render. When I search for it, The results are always how to add a 2D image as reference in the window your using. For the moment I don’t desire that. Just a simple blue sky in the background is all i want during render time. I think I found it under the scene area as background (between camera and active clip). Is this the right area? When I click on it nothing shows up. Not even an option to add an image.

Hi,

don’t get me wrong, it sounds like you want to kill the rendering time by watching the sky. No, seriously now, you want the image to be part of your scene (bakground)? Are you using BI (blender internal renderer) or Cycles? How do you want to map the background image into your render? I mean, the world background is not a rectangle. It is where nothing else is.

One way is by using the compositor. The compositor can combine the render result with a background image. For this purpose, the background must be transparent. Go to properties window -> render panel -> shading -> Alpha: Transparent

Open the node editor (Shift+F3), activate the compositor (the left-most of the 3 icons) and enable “use nodes”:

Then add the nodes like this:

I think it’s obvious. If not, feel free to ask.

Oh, but maybe you’re just looking for this much simpler solution: In the properties window, world panel, there’s the “World” section (Horizon color property and others). Maybe this is sufficient. Otherwise use the compositor. And if you’re using Cycles, let us know.

At the location you’ve mentioned, you can select a different scene (you can have multiple in one blend file) that is just displayed (not editable) in this scene. So it’s not what you’re looking for. (BTW, thx for mentioning, I’ve never tried this before.)

You can also add a background image to your camera. Look in the Background Image section of the 3D window Properties panel (press N if the panel is not visible).
