2D-Topdown-Game: Question about basics

Dear Blender Community

Since I’m a kid, I had this one dream of making an online game. Now, some years later, I met a web-coder and I’ve learned visual-designer.

After all, I stick to some basic questions and it seems like im not good enough to google. It’s hard, when you don’t know, if that 7 hour course is worth or not.

We’ve already made the web-servers for the game and basic stuff like hitting, join games, health and so on works. We work with Node JS.

But when it comes to the visual part, to the animation, we are just stumped. The idea is an online 1vs1, Champion based (up to 8 Skills) aslant top-down arena game.

The part where we stuck exactly is the overall design of the characters and the animation of their movement, especially the 2d topdown-view (8 different sites you can walk so 8 animations per spell/function) and the spells itself.

I’m not very skilled in drawing characters and I just have some basic in After Effects cause I made some banners as work. In Blender I just know how to model normal things, but I have no idea of animation and I don’t know if it’s the right program for doing 2d top-down stuff.

I’m very motivated to learn how to draw characters and how to animate and I saved 10 hours per week for doing it and so my mate does, but we just don’t know in which way we should realize that and how we should spend our time.

But when it comes to the computer science or idea aspect of the game, we have plenty of ideas, it’s just the implementation of the animation/characters.

Thanks for reading and helping

Greetings

Meshila

I make eight directional sprite sheets with Blender. The process is nothing too mind blowing really, the basic idea is animating the model and taking pictures of it from different angles for each pose of an animation. Here’s a good starting point on that: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NHPr6Qi-n3c

But there is software out there designed specifically for 2D character creation, like Spriter and such. Handpainting is the old-school way of going about this, and I wholesomely respect the approach still being considered today, but it is much more time-consuming. With all those hours to invest one might as well find a humanoid model that’s already rigged and practice animating that in Blender, but if you really want to take the toughest route then more power to you.

to make it simpel for you

blender can make anything you want of game types, if you cnow how take advantge of it, and by that i mean if your a python scripter, thin thers no limit,

if your aiming of doing simple and small game for pc
thin yes blender is what you should go for
but if you have afuture plance of exporting that game on multipol platforms, thin i recomend you to see other options,
unity godot UE$ etc.

about the visual part, modelig / animation, its offten hard to do this types of stuff,
but most people here go,s to finding some people who are welling to help thim ,
ther are lots of artist over here who can help you creat your art,
but you can always build a game with a simple basic art, made of boxs and find someone who can work for you , to replace thim later on

this is just my way of seeing thing,s it,s not all right ,just an opinion

So you need help on modelling and animation?

(The Game Engine Support and Discussion is aiming for how to create games with the BGE.)

I created some Isometric topdown assets in the past and bookmarked this:

It helped me a lot. Specificly the part with the camera angles.
What I did is set the camera up and then made actions for each angle in the dope sheet.

I have attached a blendfile with some of the angles in the actions:

Isometric camera actions angles.blend (801.2 KB)

Wow thanks for the whole answers, they’re very informativ!

@Liebranca

Seems like Animate CC wasn’t the right tool. When I was trying to make all these hand-animated characters, it seemed that this isn’t the best way, so thanks for the video, that helps much.

@alf0

Actually the game will be 100% web-based with a little login. That stuff we’ve already done.
So you mean it would be possible that I could find some persons that would join my project for free?

Actually I see 2 ways for doing that. 1. Learn how to animate with Blender, use some basic characters and just give them a cartoonish look and learn how to animate them or 2. Launch the whole project here on a accomplished way, that we might find 1 or 2 free character-/animation- designer.

Wow, the force of a forum shown: “True Isometric” is exactly what we though we would make. Had some problems finding usefull stuff under topdown, because it mostly showed the normal 2d-top-down. Thanks!

yeah ther are lots of people who are willing to help for free as ana experince work for thim
