3D Artists: What Are Your Biggest Workflow Frustrations?

Hey everyone!

I’m a Creative Media and Game Technologies student at Hanze University. I’m currently working on a project and I need your help! I’m exploring problems that 3D artists encounter during their workflows, particularly tasks that take more time or effort than expected.

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to share their experiences:

  1. What’s one frustrating or unnecessarily time-consuming problem you’ve encountered while working on a 3D project?

  2. Can you describe a specific example of when it happened?

  3. How did you deal with it, and does it happen regularly?

I’m mainly interested in understanding the challenges people actually experience.

Thanks in advance for any responses!

well, if you search this forum you’ll see that this is a recurring question some people ask basically every one or two months… Generally it’s about finding leads for AI based solution and probably some form of market inquiries…

Thing is, most of those problems are solved by some addons in one way or another. This doesn’t mean 3D is a perfect world that doesn’t need to evolve, but first you ask 10 people and you get 10 very different answers and they all have some form of solutions to that…
This is also very dependent of the kind of projects you’re working on and what do you do in practice obviously.

Generally, it’s not something that is solved from an outside POV, but since some artists are also technical they can build their tools, use them and refine them daily and at some point selling or sharing that is the next move.

Long story short, if you’re after developing a solution yourself, most of the low hanging fruits and even much complex problems are already solved.

If you’re really into understanding that just for the sake of analyzing that, just look at the 10/20 top sales of addons and this will give you an idea of the problem and the solution they provide.

Maybe what still asks for some form of development is project management, or how you can make a project with a team and keep everyone in sync. Since it’s a multiple part problem that is split between how you share files, how everyone knows what they have to do, how you automate shot creation , how you render stuff and many more things.

Why this is something that people still need despite the fact that there is already some solutions available ? Because this is so specific to the team size, the projects (eg a 5mn AAA sequence vs a 52x11mn series) even the studio’s culture, their DCCs … that to be effective it’s a per studio solution with adjustments per projects…

Hope that helps, feel free to ask if you have further questions…
