Update- I have added an animated movie of my character to youtube have a look-see
The Vitruvian Man- Fully Animated Character Complete!
Hello fellow artists,
I have been working for many moons on this project- a fully articulated 3d character. Please give me your comments and creative suggestions. This is a base character, meaning he can easily be modified to create thousands of other characters. I am new to the blender scene, I need some honest feedback on this.
I am also posting in this forum to get as many people involved with my current project- a full length feature film utilizing blender and hand drawn animation. I Am currently collecting as many free 3d models I can. Please donate if you can, I need anything from desks, to apples, mailboxes etc. They need not be textured, only low poly. All those who contribute will of course be credited in the film.
-and here’s my website if you fancy a gander, of course it is not complete as of yet. http://mightycow.com
It is a fantastic job. Congratulations. I hope I can do something like that in the future… I am from spain, and I want you to look for this expresion: “me quito el sombrero”
well…cumbersome, it’s hard to get it to do what you want it to. But I must admit there are new improvements in the updates that give you greater control- however I found the rigging process far more complicated and time consuming than actually making the model - which is extremely user friendly and intuitive it’s like wearing a 3d glove with blender!!!
But yeah when I say cumbersome, that also speaks to my inexperience using the armatures.
Well I’ve only done fairly simple riggining in Blender … nothing that would compare with your rig.
And I’ve dabbled a bit with all the other “big name” packages, but again haven’t done any extensive rigging.
So I can’t fairly compare Blender to those packages when attempting anything beyond a basic rig.
All of the 3d packages have steep learning curves, and to create even a simple rig will take some time to be sure.
If you are indeed proficient with the other major packages, and have created a similarly complex rig with them and have found it considerably easier than Blender, then I apologize, and retract my flippant remark.
For just the simple stuff I’ve attempted I actually found the most expensive program (Houdini) to be the most cumbersome, un-friendly and downright slow program out there.
I know what you mean. Honestly this is my first real rig and character. I have alot of experience with animation and 2d rendering. I feel confident enough in blender now to band out rigs at a much faster rate so I believe I was too harsh on my website using the word cumbersome.
But blender is a blessing, I think it rocks- so i takie it all back.
that’s freakin’ amazing . I don’t think accomplishing what you did is easy in any app. I guess if we had some dedicated muscle sim (there exists a project for this) some of your work would have been easier, but stil… that’s fantastic.
good luck with the rest of your project.
Blender can import a wide range of “alien” file formats.
.obj seems to work quite well, and most dxf, 3ds work as well. Lots of free models in those formats on the web.
If you’re looking for more rigged models, including SlikDigit’s ManCandy rig, check out my “best of Blender”
thread, where I have links to all the best rigs that have been donated by other members here.
I’ve rigged a fair amount in Maya and when it comes to weight painting I still find myself banging my head off the table sometimes… Although thats speaking from 8.5 down… 2008 I haven’t used yet… Houdini… Eh, never used that one, minus looking at the price tag for it and running away in a hurry… Made Maya Unlimited 7K tag look like something from the bargain bin…
