3d Manga/Anime short film W.I.P

My idea, came to me when I saw, the Durian
team making everything with low polygon to create
a story to show the basic stand ins and props for
the over all idea from the story boards.

Simple, cartoon kind of Pixar style and a lot of non realism.
It will or should be good with using lots of color and
exploring the use of different effects, I’m thinking
about character concept and should I go for more
simple forms.

I am inspired to do it for my project too, so here
is just low poly model I followed from Johnathon Williamson,
it is used for games.but I will use low poly for the simple example.
Until I can replace it with high poly models and textures.

Basic color codes for certain objects are going
to be used to give elements there means.

(p.s Sorry the crotch is not fixed)

How to model a low poly character in Blender 3D | Video « Wonder How To

Here you can find the link, if you would like to
do the same, many of you already know this I think.

I will add more detailed hands and give him
basic rig to animate through scenes.

Here is the tutorial I followed then took
the chance to make it more alien and less realistic.
So what do you think? To me Blender’s
Particle system works more like hair then grass.
Here are a few shots of the grass, aiming
for the that cartoonist feel.

Mm fresh pasture …

So I am working with layers also, each
render is a layer on the same mesh, enjoy.

1st Layer; is basic grass, that cows eat and sheep.
2nd layer; is the alien strange moss that
will glow-It is really interesting.

The Base Mesh is not sub surfed and it is
just shadeless as it is black no point in
rendering something that is black-ha ha
(Could save you render time)

Here is what I call “Slush” it looks soft
maybe I’ll make use of it for under water scenes.

I’ll try redoing the character I might go for
the big eye, Manga / Anime Style.

Here is a quick render with 3 layers of grass,
long withering color is the yellow strands, green
and subtle dark areas.2000 strands, children
for each layer is 200 and X that by 15 for each
makes this, in a 5 minute render.

and another render with the same layers, just
less strands and no children, I like them so far.

Disappointing and just shocked with 2.52, from what I have seen
come out of 2.52 it has really good performance which is good
but results, well you’ll see from this render. Which has exactly
the same settings as the Cartoon Grass rendered in 2.49c,
Which looks more like grass and more cartoon like , but with
2.52 the grass looks like carpet…

Moving a long I’ll be doing some Volumetric clouds
and some other tutorials to create this project.

p.s I’m pretty much just following the leader with
learning blender as I have been looking for a great program
to use for a while, the amount of tutorials for blender is amazing
and some day I would love to work for the Institute.

Okay I put a few images together to show what my
scene might look like, but it’s something that works
perfectly for now.
I am so bad at digital painting I decided to just make it
Simple and use Oily outlines and Cartoon effect in gimp.
I will proceed, each item in the scene is important, for the
film, so the house, the bridge to the fields to the mountains.
It shows the limits oh and the tracks from the drive way,
sort of gives you the idea people come and go.
Look forward to making more tomorrow, I did a tutorial on
volumetric Clouds today, but have nothing to show yet.

<Dream>I like the concept of this image it seems like it could exist-but doesn’t<Dream>

Building the house from scratch, will show realistic
architecture of the structural design, which is fun,
I followed a diagram from a builders image.
Here are the renders, I am studying suspend-able
bridges too, and will upload some of that tomorrow
when I am free.

I used array to repeat the mesh but also had to flip
and rotate mesh to follow for gaps in the bricks.

Bit by bit day by day, this is an exciting program
to use so far.

Cool, that you are doing these tutorials and learning.

One thing though. If I am not mistaken I have seen images like the above image you are referencing. I have seen something like that in an Architectural textbook. That is an example of putting Lath in front of the brick if I am not mistaken.

http://harbourtownllc.com/lath_n_plaster.jpg

Or over studs:

http://www.house-plans.org/images/LathAndPlaster.gif

This is what it looks like on the backside of a stud wall after plaster.

http://image.absoluteastronomy.com/images/encyclopediaimages/l/la/lath.jpg

I don’t think you’d want to model that and also if you are planning on bricks, there is a brick node that would be much better to use, or even an image.

Good luck with the project and some tutorials on modeling and texturing buildings might be a good idea before you dig in on that part.

Richard Culver, Thank you so much, and yes these are Just
the same as you have shown me!I would end up making everything
If I saw those books.

I will explain, I am Building everything & as you can guess.
I mean Everything, then deleting mesh to save render time. But the
renders are only taking seconds not minutes, I really am excited now!
If I had that book Richard, I would be trying to make everything from scratch!

Here is the Roof’s Shingle.

Oh I saw a tutorial somewhere to coy the objects onto
a new mesh, and which looks simply amazing.
It looks a little better then just baking or only using Norms.

Excited!
I drew a birds eye view of the scene and
what you see is pretty much what you get to see,
because there is only a house, a bridge, grass/dirt
and a river this can all be done with complexity.

The Back ground will be rendered for a backdrop, but will all have to
be modeled, because the character will walk over the bridge through
the fields, past the trees and enter the mountains, to find something.

…I wonder what he comes across…<Hehe>

Okay onto the Bridge-I re thought about it and didn’t find this modern
bridge would fit the time/Era of everything else. I will make a stone
sort of a semi circle and it will be fun because of how rocky it will be
and it will be less mathematical.

Attachments

Still concentrating on the house, I should do one thing
at a time, but its really easy so far.Painting the textures
on should be fun, I will do the bridge after I model the windows.

(The doors spindle/knob will be modeled and hinges separately)
<Detail to be added later>

Enjoying this learning curve.

You remind me so much of myself. I jumped in with both feet as well, while it is good to have a goal and start working on it, The giant project you have in your head, is probably too much to bite off right now. I would participate in the weekend challenges to build your skills, write a script, draw storyboards to previsualize your projects, and overall just slow down. When I first started learning blender I thought it would “make things easier”. Like blender would overcome my lack of drawing and animating skills, in reality it is much easier for a non-artist to learn to draw and animate in 2d, than it is to learn to model and animate in 3d. Bear that in mind as you proceed.

Good Luck and best wishes for a successful project!

Chimney is done, its hardly seen and might not be seen at all, but I should do it because I really want to test out those new volumetric simulations, and it makes you think someone lives in the house.

What is interesting, this reminds me of merry Poppins…It still needs cleaning up.

Thank you so much, oh I see I should step back and draw
up some storyboards .I’m looking at how BBB did there storyboards.

I had drawn up 6 thumbnails boxes to draw each step into, but
now I might do 2 steps of the story boards on a A4 so that I
can see what I am working with.

Was researching things should get onto those story boards, I have a
good idea for the story line.

lol! Well, you won’t find me being the one to stop someone from modeling everything they can get their hands on. If it helps you. Go for it!

Model until you can’t see straight and then take a break.

(What I do)

lol.

Have fun.

Looks nice so far1 How did you make the rainbow lookin clumps in one of the above posts?

Hey sorry, I was just searching for a head tutorial to
follow & think this is going to be of some use, oh the
rainbow sort of effect ha ha, very very simple it is.
Would you like a screen shot of the settings for the
Particles or for the Material settings?

Sorry for not responding I’ve been drawing with all
the free time I can get, and have come up with a
few concepts and manga/anime basic drawings
I have never really done manga so its really nice
to do it for once.

“Oh oh” I’ve found a site where people can
learn to model a Manga head very similar to
Sin-tel…I do question if they followed it as my model
is starting to resemble her a lot …?But I’m modeling
a boy, well as long as it doesn’t look like I’ve just
imported it and edited it I’ll be happy.

Here are the links

Hmm I’ll wait for your reply, then I’ll
frap some screens for you.

<have modeled the head -Just got to redo the ears>
<p.s the poor body needs a head fast>

This is the tutorial I followed. For my head(Which I’m still working into a Manga style)
http://www.cgarena.com/freestuff/tutorials/misc/earsmodeling/index.html

I’ve decided to start the film with the adults as Anime & the children as
Chibi which are the big head, small bodied characters, usually just to save
time modeling,and drawing them.

I have written the script and full story, did a few pages
of story boards and will clean them up in gimp, also am
trying very hard with modeling the character in different
ways, results with modeling clean edge loops and good topology
leave the head looking…Very basic.

I want a little bit more characteristics to come out so ill keep modeling
people until I find one I like, but its a laughing situation.

>when I stand back and look at most of them, they look demented- not enough effort I guess.>

Here is a 10 minute idea that worked, pretty well.
using spheres and blocks to show what the skeleton
would look like when you draw on paper, but used
as a guide to shape the idea of the model.

Then when you have a template like a fashion
figure, I created a flat mesh out line of the blocks
then filled" them creating a 2 dimensional character.

<I didn’t know it would work>

Then switched to side view and did the same by pulling,
scaling, & using Transforming tools and the proportional editing tool
to give it more loose ability to become 3d.

Now that I have worked it up to this point in a matter of 15 minutes
I’ll delete the skeleton/sphere figure, then retopo the 3d model,
using the model I first started with which has good bendable joints
on the arms and legs or should I just cut joints on this mesh?
either way it’s going to end up as my high polygon character.

p.s Tell me what you think of using this technique?
<I also had good reference pictures I used from a Manga site
so make sure you don’t just follow the skeleton -I think you’d end up with
a very very deformed model, not in a good way either.

I’ll clean this up and show you it later.

<You can see where it needs editing, I might need help
because… I don’t know a lot about loops or topology.
“if you set an example I could only get more excited!”
Oh this could be useful for game characters too, if you want
a easy way to model nearly anything.

Attachments

Okay done it wasn’t to hard, because he has joints
I only had to turn them and bring the muscle mass down
a bit as my characters are those super slim stick like
Manga, I need some tutorials on Muscle modeling or
should I just model them from anatomy books?I’ve got
some on the shelf I think, I better have a look here is the
screen-shot of what I just did.

<wasn’t going for a comic strip theme anyway>

Edit: Update okay we had a very fat model didn’t we, as in "I
Okay, I made him taller, realizing his torso wasn’t as equal
to the lower body, but now its fixed it looks a lot more like
the typical skinny Anime character.I deleted the idea of
using chi-bi they’re fat and out of proportion completely.

So more updates tomorrow I should rest.
< I’ll try to use my time productively>
