A "fusion" between two objects?

Haven’t figured out putting this in searchable words and whether this is applied to the Physics section of Blender Artist: How do I achieve this effect: making a “fusion” between two objects making them both attact each other surfaces.

Cast Modifier has something like it but appearently just orienting to centerpoint of opposing object. Any suggestions? Below is a sketch (the red part).

Kind regards,
Mikael

Shrinkwrap modifier with weight painting, referencing a target (plane) on a hidden layer maybe?

If those are simple forms, I would suggest making the object from metaballs… and animate it.
I used them here:

Hi Craig and Karlis.
Thanks for your input  I guess I have to do some more studying about the subjects you mention before I can make the artwork. Now you have supplied me a couple of options I can test out.

Kind regards,
Mikael

Conclusion:

The Meta Ball option was the way for me to go though I didn’t have the guts to use it in front of my deadline yesterday thus drawing that part in Illustrator “by hand” (look below).

Though next time …

Here’s the workpath for my own didactical interest and perhaps others too:

(1) Use “Threshold” to control the “bridge” between the balls. (2) Convert to Mesh and (3) fill the deleted part with “F”-key. (4) Dont forget to apply the “Edge split”-modifier in the end.

The finished 2D artwork, which in style actually is beyond formal 3D tavoir, was drawn i Illustrator all over (chicken, me ;)) as seen here:

Kind regards and – again, Craig and Karlis – many thanks for your helpful responses.
Mikael
