Hi, here’s a little character I recently finished. A big thank you to the people in this forum as I’ve spent lots of time here learning about Blender, 3D modeling and stuff.
Also, in the tutorial section, I’ve uploaded a Blender tutorial on my solution for making cartoon eyes, I hope people will find useful
Polygon work done in Silo 2.
Everything else done in Blender including: sculpting, texturing, materials, normal maps, rigging and rendering. (RenderBranch 2010)
Wow, very good, an attractive female character who obviously has more on the ball than her good looks. Excellent proportions without being over-inflated, and she poses very naturalistically. The clean lines of all the elements add up to a very solid stylistic signature that really reinforces her character, good choices there. Superb cashmere and wool materials, too.
This is great on so many levels, but I really want her hair to either be less painterly and/or have more specularity, perhaps a spec map to define some strands but not too detailed, maybe using a ramp for secondary highlights, and maybe a touch of falloff as well. I understand that toon hair is a difficult area, but everything below the hair is perfect. http://gurneyjourney.blogspot.com/2008/04/hair-ribbon-secret.html In one of his books there is a better example but after spending 20 min looking through his blog I’m done! Hope you don’t mind the crits!
Great work going on :). Love the lighting and skin material. Nice touch with the legging seams to . But I want to agree with (jay), the hair could use ‘imperfections’ since the color texture defines different strands. But good work nonetheless.
Not to stir argument, but I prefer the hair as is, it seems to me to fit better with the very straightforward, almost hard-edged, style the rest of the character presents. Hard edges but smooth curves, a very interesting contrast that works good mojo. There’s plenty of color variation in the hair and the flow of the painted strands follows the mesh structure beautifully. It is broadly stroked in, true, but the rest of the character is rather broadly-stroked as well, without a lot of low-level detail that is, for her, unnecessary.
The more I look at her, the more I think she does need one accessory: a small necklace, maybe small pearls. Nothing flashy like gemstones, but she seems the kind to wear some understated jewelry.
Argh! The hair! Yeah, I spent lots and lots of time trying to get the hair right. I went through about five or six versions, some with more detail, some with less detail, I decided to go with a relatively simple version that matched the simple lines of the character - maybe it could use a little something. As for the hair material, it looks fantastic from the otherside. He he.
Argh! The hair!!!
Jewelery ( necklace, bracelets etc. ) would work well, but the the woman in the photo that was the inspiration for this character wasn’t wearing any, so I figured meh… Certainly, however, it would be something to consider.
I started this character for the Mixamo contest, but didn’t finish in time - oh well. I think I’ll put this aside for now and take a look at it in a few months, with fresh eyes.
Again, Thanks for your comments - lots of great observations
