A watercooler

Hi everyone

I decided to build up the confidence and post my second ever Blender scene. After spending 2 to 3 weeks doing various tutorials I have decided to try and do various scenes without a tutorial so that I am not depending to much on them.

So here it is, I started off modelling a watercooler after a random urge I got last night to make one which then made me want to do a small scene with it, I am trying to get the “office” look.

Thanks

Going to leave it at this today

I went ahead and added a coffee vending machine to it  Not sure what else to add, maybe a vending machine for crisps and chocolate?

EDIT; Actually the buttons are going, they don’t look good, got an idea for a better looking one.

The wall is a LOT noisy for my tastes but I don’t work in an office. I like it otherwise! The model is sound but the water jug looks empty. Perhaps a new piece of geometry for the water itself and the waterline - Water’s tough to capture in materials, but your watercooler is good enough for that hard work to be worth it. Trash can’s a nice touch too. Need an outlet with some plugs and wires next I’d say.

The plastic bag in the trash bin helps to add some realism to the scene.
The water cooler looks like it is either empty or so full that no air is above the waterline.
This should be an interesting scene when finished.
I see that others had the same thought about the water.
Regarding the texture on the wall, it does look a bit on the extreme side to me as well, but perhaps that is only because it is so different from what I am used to.
It looks as though you have the start of an electrical outlet behind the waste bin yes?

Hi and thanks

Yes I made a little plug there for the watercooler but it is barely visible :open_mouth:

I have never worked in an office myself but I always imagined one of those walls in an office with cubicles of some sort lol Or maybe I was thinking of the ceiling :stuck_out_tongue: I will try with a different kind of wall material.

I will also have a play with the water

I also went and changed the buttons as it was annoying me, probably wouldn’t have been able to sleep tonight if I didn’t do them lol (They are not straight as the array went a bit wonky so I had to c&p each button instead).

Also, just because I am the curious sort, is the wall an image texture or a progressive one?

An image

Well that’s it for the night from me  Thanks for the feedback

I changed the image of the coffee machine and added the new buttons, I also tried to make the water bottle look full. Tomorrow more

The new coffee buttons are fantastic - practically invisible since in real life they’re so tiny most of the time. I’m totally surprised that wall is an image. I thought it was a procedural texture of some sort gone awry. SonnySee and I agree (I think) that the water tank is cool the way it is because the light is excellent coming through it, but that it still needs a water line which, I’m sorry, will decimate the appearance of the wall behind it from refraction. But if it’s half full, that beautiful light will still come through to the wall behind it.

As a creative request: Can you put the equipment on a corner and then use a cubicle divider to “seal” up the scene from showing too much background? The image could use depth.

Some more suggestions;

The vending machine does not look right. Physically the model looks fine to me, but needs more texturing. You might try a glossy or anistrophic shader for the light grey sections. (Assuming you’re using Cycles because of the grain ;))
The wall texture would be the right sort of thing for ceiling tiles, not a wall.
Here are some examples of textures I think could work well for a wall:

Off to a good start though, keep it up. Models like this can come in quite handy.

lol Yeah I am using Cycles, that was 100 samples I think :stuck_out_tongue: Everything is taken on board and today I shall be making a fair few changes

I have changed various things from the feedback

  • Water bottle now has a waterline (not sure if very waterlike though :P)
  • Change the perspective to put it in the corner of the room
  • Wall texture has been replaced with one recommended in the thread
  • Clock added
  • Plug added for the coffee machine

I tried button a piece of plastic to cover the drink choices but it doesn’t look good (can be seen in this render) so I will be removing that, I will also be adding various other objects in the scene.

Thanks for the feedback  Keep it coming

Your doing a nice job on this… thank goodness you changed the walls  Have you experimented with any other materials for the base of the water cooler… looks almost too white to me. I like the little detail you added with the cup on the floor. It’s kind of hard to tell if your floor material is carpet or linolium. Perhaps consider trying a tile material with some bump.

Don’t be afraid to put that water material right up to the edges of the container. The electric cords could get a lot bigger/thicker and now that I look at it, the neck of the 5 gallon water jug is dangerously far out - I think the hole that holds it should be larger and the jug sunk in further for stability. The material improvements are looking good. And harleynut97’s right that a smaller carpet texture will work better with some bump or even, if you’re feeling brave, some particles!

Another update and another thanks for the feedback

  • Sign on the wall added
  • Chair and table added (although I didn’t realise the table was so low until after the render lol)
  • Microwave added
  • New carpet added (maybe too much displacement? Although I think it looks better than being 100% flat)
  • Cables thickened
  • 5 Gallon bottle put in more and the funnel hole made bigger to accommodate it.

100 samples

The main thing that I think would help would be some sort of trim or molding at the intersection of the wall and floor.
Also, those water jugs are only like an eighth of an inch thick, this render makes it look like it’s an inch thick. I don’t know if that’s a function of the IOR, but I’d check that.
Coffee machine looks better now.
The walls look O.K., you might try a mix node with a plain diffuse, and if you’re using bump mapping, turn it down a notch.
The chair looks kind of big for the scene, look at the coffee machine, then the chair. It might just be perspective, I’m not sure.
Also just personal preference, I’d make the water jug more full (about 3/4)
