This is the requested separate thread for discussing software / websites for cross-field collabs between artists, requested in this thread. Content to follow…
Oh my god, that is a BRILLIANT idea! Maybe not the camchat version (too many… ‘incidents’), but something that connects creative types! I am so on board with that, do you have ideas for it??
Edit: What I meant by that is that if I can get a clear picture of how to do it, I am willing to create that, including provide domain/hosting and so on. Just to be clear.
If you know how to program something like that, that’d be great!
Yeah, not sure about the camchat. I guess that could always be an option, but I myself prefer just an ordinary text chat. If we actually want to take this seriously, I could provide a mock-up design which wouldn’t be functional but would be kinda what it should look like. (obviously taking design opinions from others here, not just my own
)
Ohhh, I was coding websites in raw HTML long before most websites today were even a thing
I’m totally on board with this! We can use this forum thread as an open talk about how to do it, if you feel okay with that?
Text chat or some forum style interface seems like a good foundation (the old abandoned Google Wave comes to mind as a jumping off point to talk function). I would LOVE to see a mock-up, or perhaps a couple of different, lower detail mock-ups to pick and choose from, and to just, y’know, get the debate started. I own a few domains that are not in much use already, I could actually see one of them being made into the first version.
Flood me with ideas. THIS MUST BE BORN!! ![]()
I’m totally OK with that! I’ll see if I can get some inspiration and create some mock-ups over the weekend.
Also, should we create another thread for this project or just use this one?
Cool!! I will be anticipating them anxiously
Don’t worry too much about the finer details, we just need to get some thoughts on the table for now!
Let’s just use this one, for now. It’s not flooding with people anyway, and making a lot of threads might be overdoing it, for now. If it gets intense, we’ll move it. How’s that sound?
Also, I’m already mulling over some ideas for the basic concept, I’ll post them here either later today or over the weekend, okay? They’re just random ideas, some bricks we can figure out how to build with later ![]()
Sounds great!
Here’s my two ideas for the online artist chat.
1
This one is based as a sort of small group discussion. Here’s my thoughts on it.
Pros:
- The ability to add an audio feature since you can easily see everyone at the same time.
Cons:
- Limited number of people in chat. (16 in this case)
- Users messages will be limited to a short line at a time. (although there’s probably room for two lines instead of just one)
- No way of going back in the chat if you want to re-read something.
- No way of sending images or other media through chat, which would be nice since this would be an artist based chat.

You can make it easier to see when someone just posted or is typing, see video below.
2
This one is based on more of a generic chat group and less of a chat room like the last one.
Pros:
- Can see infinite history.
- Can post as long of a message as you want. (would still need to be limited though)
- Can click on any user and see their profile while in chat.
- No limit to how many people can be in chat.
Cons:
- Can’t implement an audio option very well.
- Might be hard to read messages if they’re always shifting.
Thoughts?
Nice, something tangible to dig into!
I like the basic idea a lot, but this is going to get MESSY when people start to really talk! I think the chronology is going to be needed. Maybe with a hide/show function per member… hmm…
A traditional chat window seems like the easiest route. Having the sidebar show who individual participants are could be neat, though. But I wonder if the two concepts can be somehow merged…
Think tank opens…
I am thinking it could be inspired by the challenges on this forum, something I have seen many other places. Like, a challenge to have two or more semi-randomly matched people make a small project together. You enter as, say, a 2D hand draw artist and get paired with a writer, and together you write a story with one or two illustrations. On that note, I never think I saw anything online that actively facilitated or even trained cross-field collabs, everything is “collab with someone who is just like you”, if it is even that. Solitary creatures, we are, we who wander this wasteland in search of our creative selves…
A quick test of a VERY simple chat script. Everything written is public and UNMODERATED, so don’t click any links and don’t blame me if someone writes something offensive ![]()

Okay if this is even pinned now: Please de-bewilder me
because i didn’t want to be negative or destructive.
You are “dreaming” of a crossover chat (/discussion) between different art(ist) (and even technical) categories to make it easier for something like colab tips/practice/work/project…
The ultimate dream would be (and now i’m dreaming) that it somekind of embed into other already existing chats forums… or at least if it would be possible to import the headlines/titles of this into for example a subforum/category of some of them? (Some are even also using discourse)… if the admin would participate in somekind of advertise banner.
Talk to Artists, Collab with Artists, ArtMakersColab
And you pushing this even my developing a prototyp… ?
You may be making it a bit bigger than it really is ![]()
But yeah, some kind of crossroad between different creative (maybe technical, not sure what you mean?) communities to foster an environment of collab projects. Not exactly the full integration of other forums/communities, but it could be neat if people in one community became aware of discussions in another, maybe just via integrated links.
Edit: Maybe a ‘slogan’ (??) like “Make friends, make stuff, make an impact”? I’m still just rolling with the idea, really…
I am a traditional artist, a CG artist, a live and studio musician/tech/writer/performer. I have mastered a number of instruments and art mediums. If you need somebody to collaborate on a project, feel free to shoot me a line. I know people. Actors, artists, musicians, dancers, animators, film people, sound people, etc etc etc. But the problem with collaboration is usually this: Most people have their own projects going on, so to get them to drop everything and work on someone else’s project usually requires considerable monetary compensation.
Oh, cool!!
No, no, it’s not like a free help recruitment center or anything. Mostly a place for people to meet people who do different creative things, rather than meeting more people who do roughly the same. And I thought adding small challenges for people to make simple collab projects could be fun, like the challenges here on BA. Maybe something like “hey, you do 3D and she does physical models, I challenge you two to make a simple model in both media together”. Veeery simple, just to get people to come a bit out of their shells.
Your wide net of connections could come in handy to get the idea out there, once I (hopefully) have something more complete and appealing to show…?
I definitely like the challenge idea! Maybe we could have a challenge page where people can submit challenge ideas and then anyone who wants to help with the challenge could register for it. Could also make official challenges (like every week or something).
I’d agree about my first mock-up, it will probably get a bit confusing.
Also, nice test chat! Had some fun messing around with it!
Oh, so you were the one testing writing lengths, eh? ![]()
I think BA has a good culture of challenges, maybe I should look at how they do it. I am thinking that anyone who has participated in some way gets the right to make a challenge or something. I was already contemplating making a website where people could earn “sticks” from challenges, and could use those sticks as prizes for other challenges. My new domain host turned out to be a dud, though, so it will be in limbo there, but I could use it here instead…
All my old coding days are coming back to me, now. It hurts my head a bit, yikes!
Why would I be writing something long? ![]()
Yeah, this might be hard to program, but I’m sure you can do it! ![]()
I know a fair bit of programming but not enough to create a chat!
Someone tested the max length of chat lines. I thought it was you!
Who the hell have I been talking to…
It was me, I was joking… ![]()
Got a website for the project, http://creativecrossover.com/
I am thinking I will assemble some free tools on the site for now, then design custom later (yes, the stuff I am already trying to code). Let’s see where this takes us…!
