"Add shader node" and "Add modifier" menus have been changed from defaults

Hello, I’m not particularly sure how to word my problem concisely but my add node menu and add modifier node menu have changed from the default settings and are now pretty annoying to use.

The add modifier menu has gone from its default array system where every modifier is viewable at once to a more foldered system.

The add shader node menu has gone from one long searchable list to a foldered system with no search function.

Things of note:

  • I haven’t touched any preference settings so this change was most likely due to a random shortcut.
  • This problem is native to all files I make meaning its a problem with my preferences and the blend file provided probably isn’t going to be that useful.
  • I’ve tried searching around for others with this issue but nothing of use has come up.
  • Loading factory settings does not work, the changed menu’s still persist.
  • Resetting theme preferences does not work.

I’d like to get back to the defaults because the way it is now is just annoying for my workflow. Sorry if I’ve missed anything important, I’ve tried to include everything pertinent.

Hi!
I assume you’ve started using 4.0/4.1, right?

In 4.0 the add menu for modifiers as well as the search functionality has been overhauled. So it’s all a bit different:

  1. The add menu for modifiers was changed to allow user defined assets (node groups) being added to it. So what you see is the new default. Some notes:

    • While navigation of the menu is probably slower, you can now just start typing to search for the modifier you wanna add.
    • You can also open upp the add modifier menu by pressing shift + A just like in the shader editor.
    • If you really can’t get used to the new layout there are already addons that bring the old layout back: e.g. https://quackers.gumroad.com/l/classic_modifier_menu
I haven’t used it myself so I can’t vauch for it but it looks pretty nice and also seems to keep the search functionality. So maybe a best of both worlds?
  2. The Shader node’s add menu is still searchable

    • When opening it via right click like in your screenshot, you can press spacebar to activate the menu search. (This in fact works for most menus now)
    • If you open the add menu directly via shift + A you can just start typing to search

It’ll probably take a bit to get used to the new systems, but I hope this somewhat helps!

Ah sweet I guess I just didn’t notice the auto-update.
Thanks for the help!
