Adventures in Scene Referred Space

I wanted to share a series of blog posts that I’ve been working on over the past twelve months that I hope will be of benefit to fellow aspiring VFX artists working with budget and/or open-source tools like Blender.

Through the series I walk through the process of generating scene referred values (effectively a wider dynamic range, more representative of real-world energy values of light) from 8-bit video from a budget consumer camera and share how this has a positive impact on compositing when integrating CG against background plates.

Blender and its implementation of OCIO color management plays a significant role in the process, though the same results are beneficial regardless of pipeline.
