Advice: Box modelling vs Sculpt & Retopo

Hi there.

I’m learning blender (and 3D in general) and I would like to ask for advice for the techniques which could be used to model something similiar to this:

I had the impression that this kind of hair is easier sculpted than box modelled/directly, but I would like to hear advice from more experienced people. (Note that it’s for a game, so retopo would be necessary if sculpting)

Thanks!

Hey yoshis… welcome to Blender, and the forums!

In general, the simpler the model, the less likely you need to utilize sculpting tools… especially since you then have the added step of retopo. So for this model I would personally go with traditional box modeling.

Then again, you have the option of mixing methods, which might be a good idea if you want to explore the different workflows and tools Blender offers. In that case, try box modeling the body, and sculpting the hair.

Looking forward to seeing what you come up with. :+1:

Thank you! I’ll try mixing the two workflows as you suggested

Hi and welcome,

seconding the advice from @Cire. Start with box modeling. Maybe add some details with sculpting and you can skip the retopo if your box modeling is good enough.
