Advice on workflow for a heavy scene

Hi. I am working with a factory scene composed of several parts. For example, “machine room,” “pipes,” etc.

I assigned a different blender file to each component (they are extremely heavy converted CAD files to fbx), and then I linked each blend file to the main scene.

It works well because my main file seems light in size, and the viewport handles the scene well (for now).
But I can see how it is becoming a bit laggier, and the file takes a while to render, loading all the meshes.

Question:

If I use a decimate modifier in the files linked to the scene. Will it help my main scene? Will a decimate modifier be active via a link? Or is it better to apply that modifier to the mesh and link it?

Thank you!

Interesting question… i never tried to add a modifier to a linked object… just try it… the data would be loaded anyway but for the render it may save time… you may also think about using a LOD (level of detail) system… hard to tell…
