After duplicating an object, can i seperate it from the original?

Hi!
I’v made a character, then i copied his armature and his body to another layer…
After that I changed it so that on layer 2 its a zombie, looking like the character but other colored and animated…
Then I went back to layer one and found out that since I repainted the copy of the character, the character have been changed too!
So I cant duplicate him and change him, cause changing the copy will change the original…
How can I prevent that?

Most likely, even though you did duplicate the mesh with [Shift+D] (as opposed to [Alt+D], which creates an object linked to the same mesh data), The material you were using was not duplicated along with it. To duplicate a material, just use the drop down menu and choose ‘Add New’ when there is already a material on your object. If you want to create a completely new material, just make sure that there is no material already set, and the ‘Add New’ option will just create a new material with the default options.
