Agnosticism

Hello everyone

This is a concept CD cover for metal band. I had to visualise the idea of agnosticism, but without using any direct symbols.

Modeled in Blender 2.49 and Sculptris
Rendered in Yafaray 0.1.1
Heavy posproduction in Photoshop

edit:
unfortunately the band choose another man to create cover because he was faster …

I was never a fun of surealism but this is a fine illustration, I’m impressed! *5

Amazing. Were any of the band members Agnostic? I am sort of.

I really love it! Excellent work!

Man you have a great style, keep up the great work. We need to get you animating

Very cool design. Nice job.

About the intent to show agnosticism, agnosticism is like any other “belief”, once one believes in something that’s it, you either believe or you don’t.The figure seems to still be contemplating ( by the question mark on his head and his pose ) so to me he’s still unsure about what he believes. But man I sure like the image, it’s very well done! regards, drief

Y’know… I don’t understand this fine piece of artwork … but I like it very much, and it is very well done.

As one definition states: “Agnosticism can be defined in various ways, and is sometimes used to indicate doubt or a skeptical approach to questions”. Agnosticism is not a belief but a questioning of the existence of something, therefore the image is an accurate example. I think, dreif, that you are confusing agnosticism with atheism, in which one does not believe in a higher power, while an agnostic would question the validity of either side, not really choosing which side of the fence is the correct one.

Awesome image, by the way.

As a long-time, devoted agnostic (I know that sounds weird, but it IS possible), I feel both intrigued and somehow flattered by your portrayal. The wondering and questioning is an integral part of it (for some, from doubt, some skepticism, some indecision, etc.), and the surrealism emphasizes that perfectly. In fact, that cover might make me buy the album, had I seen it in a store (and for me, that’s saying a lot).

Oooooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Man, am loving this explosion of really good art that has been occurring over the last few months on this forum. This is a fine piece of work you should be proud, thumbs up and five stars from me.

Very nice.

Wooow, thanks for all comments!

Yep

Oh, animating is too hard for me ;( I should spent A LOT of time to create nice organic animation, and even more to create satisfying results, mood etc. Definitely i’ll not do it by myself.

@dreif - Agnosticism is not a kind of belief. It’s kind of philosophical idea or way you live IMO.
When I was creating this image I understand agnosticism as a question, doubt, … the sentence “i don’t know and you don’t know either” and that our world can be unknowable… so I’m glad I made you happy Pipeline

Firstly thanks for that sentiment

Secondly, just because it is something I care about a lot, agnosticism can be both. Very crudely described, there is “soft” agnosticism, which is kind of “I don’t know the answer. Maybe I can find out, maybe I will never know. But I sure can’t say anything for sure here and now”. Then there is “hard” agnosticism, which is more “there is no possible way of knowing the Divine. Humans do not truly have the capacity to know it, only to believe in various ideas of it. It is simply beyond human comprehension (but that does not make belief wrong or silly, it just means it is based on faith, not knowledge or evidence)”.

On a note that can really make some people crazy, agnostics (technically) have the same attitude towards atheists as any other belief: “Yeah, maybe those guys can’t prove God or any god exists, but you guys can’t prove he doesn’t, so it’s a tie. You both just believe what makes more sense to you”.

And just for the finishing touch, there are outright nutty, introspectively insane agnostics, who do not even believe their own agnosticism to be an actual “answer”, but that theirs is a belief like any other, and that maybe, in some way weird and nonsensical to them, someone might actually be able to “know” some Divine “truths”, even if they themselves do not believe it possible. That’s my crew

My inappropriate semi-religious rant has ended

Actually Xelptic, now that I think about it, the reality is that your compositions already have movement to them (even a seemingly static one like this). What you really need is an online gallery! :stuck_out_tongue:

@pipeline - thanks for sharing your thoughts about agnosticism
It’s definitely not “pussy atheism”

@jay - oh, I have online gallery, on deviantart for example :stuck_out_tongue:

They really should have chosen yours!
