I was recently attempting a scene of a caterpillar sitting on a mushroom smoking a hookah. I downloaded all these models from SketchFab and started to put it together. Then I got hung up on trying to improve the models, which were not all made in Blender, so that caused some difficultly. The caterpillar was made of unconnected pieces, so I joined them all with the remesher in sculpt mode, then I went looking for a better image to use. Then I wanted to add gills to the mushroom because the model wasn’t made for close ups. Anyway, this is as far as I got. I ran out of time for the thing I was making it for. I may take it up again and work on it some more.
As you can see, the caterpillar doesn’t have much detail. I’m going to completely remodel a new one with some character features. My idea was to make it a more realistic caterpillar, rather than a cartoon character. I think that would be more disturbing.
This beautiful hookah model is by Irina.Tuchna
The original mushroom model is by Timothy Hsu I added a displacement map for the white spots and used Blender’s adaptive subdivision.
The caterpillar at this point is mostly mine since I did so much work on it. This was the original model Monarch Butterfly Larva with Annotated Anatomy - Download Free 3D model by oneillbeck [f1453e0] - Sketchfab
Certainly a good start. Wonderful.
Thanks! I’m going to model my own caterpillar so it has a recognizable mouth, and then I can rig the hookah pipe into the mouth.
can you share the modified mushroom version?Im curious how you achieved this.
Yes, basically, I took the color image, made it grayscale, and increased the contrast. This is the bump map/displacement map.
Then I used adaptive subdivision:
