I am doing this for this weeks WC: science fiction. Next step will be to retopo him, and probably some more multires sculpting to make his normals map.
are you going to use the material nodes to do a normal map or the one done for UVmap

thanks guys, yeah, I think I am going to make a multires version on the retopo’d mesh and sculpt in some veins and stuff, then bake those onto the mesh I am making now. I’m about halfway done with it, the brain is kind of slow and tedious, but it has to be fairly dense. Here’s my current progress on the retopo.

Well, it was kind of short notice this week, so I don’t think I’ll be able to do an entire body, but maybe just an upper body. I’ll probably append a three fingered hand I made recently, and put him in some kind of space garb. I was originally thinking of sculpting in the veins on a high poly stand-in, and then baking those normals onto this model, but now, I’m thinking I may paint a grayscale bump map, and use that also as a mask for UV painting him. That way the bump will match the diffuse perfectly. If I have enough time I want to stick him in a flying saucer too.

Thanks, I have decided to take my time on this, rather than cut corners in order to get it in on time, so I have now somewhat tweaked the shape of his head, and I’ve started painting in the nor map for the veins on his brain.

Now I’m repainting it using my wacom tablet, which I should have done in the first place. I guess I figured it would bog down texture paint in the 3D window, but it didn’t seem to.

Getting closer. I think I will change the veins back to purple, though, and paint in some fake shadows to emphasize the major contours of his face.

I think I’ve worked out the head material, decided to go with the red veins, also made a spec map, and a bit of multiplicative blending to emphasize his features. I am thinking green reptilian eyes maybe.

it would look real cool if you added a scar/wound going across his face, maybe add some puss
oh man this is coming out great, multires/sculpt and such features are really making it possible to get fantastic results that would take ages with normal subdiv techniques.
One improvement i could suggest (though it could eb a tricky one to do =) ) is to include a little more purple/blue veins in the mix with the red, though there are just the right amount of veins already imo, so maybe a way of adding some slight change in colour to those.

Thanks LohnS, yeah, I may yet add some purple and blue to the veins, which will be no problem, because I made a stencil from the nor map. I missed the boat for the WC though, because I was helping a friend of mine move. Brados, sounds good, but I need to move on to other aspects of the scene before I go batty. Just working out the general shape of his body right now, not sure what he’s going to have for clothing. perhaps I shall drape a robe over him using the cloth simulator.

Looks awesome dude. Love the color of the head, gives it a menacing look. Are you going to keep that color and all the vains throughout the rest of the body?
