Alien

Hi, first time poster here. I’ve been reading these forums for a while and figured I may as well join the community. I’ve been using blender on and off for about 6 months or so. I finally decided to make something organic.

I went with an alien because it’s harder to judge what an alien should look like than a human. 8)

Anyway, I’ve pretty much done the head. There are a few problems with my mesh (first time trying to model using edge loops). One is a bump on the forehead. I think it has something to do wish subsurfing with my vertices too close together.

C&C is welcome on the model. I suck at texturing, so you can comment on the material (very WIP) but I can’t promise I’ll be able to make it better.

Nice. Weird shapes, but hey, it’s an alien!

Most of the critique I have on this model is hard to avoid with the inconsistent densities of subsurf modelling, and the same things that I have never posted a head on elysiun.com for. I start with NURBS, and it’s all good and fine until I get up to the ears, and can’t continue because tra-la there’s too many CVs. I try to use subsurf modelling instead, and the interesting bits start to weirdify.
This is exactly what I’m talking about with your model. Even in the render, around the facial features, the change in the density of vertices really does show. I don’t know how to fix it, but maybe you can work something out…

The lesson seems to me to be that even with surbsurf modelling, you need a lot of subsurfCVs on your head.
…Must try using the new edge sharpness feature for that one day (coming in blender 2.34 IIRC)…

Hehehe!Nice Alien!

Are you going to make al the body?

Looking good! I quite like it. The bump might be fixed by either recalculating the normals or removing doubles. Other than that, it could be a texture problem or merely a mesh problem.

I’m sorry it’s been a while since I made that post. I’ve been juggling work, school, and a girlfriend. I’ll probably work on the body later today for an hour or so… so who know how far I’ll get. I’d like to finish this model and then add armatures, as I’ve never done it before. First time for a lot of things with this model.

With any luck, I’ll have an update in a few hours or so.

Edit: I went ahead and fixed the bump on the top of the forehead.

Quick update. I have the upper torso mostly done.

I’m going for a tall, skinny, creepy vibe. I’m gonna work on it for another hour or so, and then I’m going on a date. If I don’t update again tonight, expect one tomorrow.

Looks good–I love the style!

Updates! ;).

I’ve done the torso. I’m not sure if I like it. I’ll probably make it skinnier… or longer. I’m not sure. I’ll try to work on it tomorrow, but for now, I’ve got a date to go on.

WOW man this looks awesome. Really good texture on him also.

Really weird but cool

[og]GrYpHoN: Thanks, I actually haven’t textured him yet. I’ve got a stucci texture for a bump map, but as far as actual color maps, I’m not sure how I’m going to do it yet. So far, I’ve just got a greyish material with a slightly green specular color for the skin. For the eyes, I’ve got a low reflectivity, black material with raytraced reflections. Although I don’t have anything to reflect in the eyes yet.

mr_bomb: Thanks. I was going for a kind of weird look.

Is there anything that anyone doesn’t like about the modeling? I can post more angles if you wish (subsurfed, wireframe, ect…).

I can’t really model any tonight, but look for an update tomorrow or Sunday. Up next is the lower torso and legs. Wish me luck.
