An astronaut on an emergency mission to repair a deep space station is suddenly forced backward when his space drill goes too far. His torn tether drifts before him as he helplessly floats back toward the planet. Alone, powerless, all he can do is watch as the station and memories of his life and dreams of the future recede into the cosmic void…
Made and rendered in Blender 2.33a with AO, the zblur plugin, and the glow plugin.
But, I dunno about that planet and the flare. The planet was clearly made fast or something I dunno. It don’t have teh same quality as the astronaut. same for the flare. I would try to work on them. or maybe just don’t put the planet…just space with a nebula far away.
if you fix that, it will be a winner (not that it is actually lol)
skeletor: Thanks! I didn’t want to overdo the torn tether part because I wanted the viewer to “discover” that Glad you did
zgm-html: Thank you very much zgm-html! It’s actually a tool, a sort of space drill. No planet in particular
Dittohead: Wow thanks!
X-WARRIOR: Thank you very much X-WARRIOR. While the planet wasn’t speedily done, you’re totally right in that it could be improved. I was going for a very cloudy planet with a hint of terrain beneath the clouds. There are three separate layers (actually spheres within spheres) for the outer cloud layer, middle cloud layer, and terrain layer. A fourth halo layer was used for the glow (a circle fragment, not a sphere). Originally I had just Blender stars in the background, but it seemed too stark and unnatural. Good luck in the wc! Your entry rocks.
Dante: THANK you SO much! Great to hear from you! You have no idea how much the encouragement means to me, and I’m so totally thankful for all of it.
absolutely wonderful!
you’ve done a great job on this one… I’ve absolutely love the planet and astronaut. I’ve got to say I didn’t really like the last few of your works, but this one is an undeniable proof of your talent…
only crit would be that the light beam around the planet should be thinner. It takes away a bit of the realism. I think it’s because it shows too much that it’s just another sphere instead of a real effect of the light.
Love this image. The astronaut modelling is superb. Of all the possible places to be alone, this is the most solitary and hopeless-- the MOST alone you can get.
I noticed that you didn’t use much blue this time around! Keep it up!

Edit: I meant keep up the good work. I don’t mind the blue!
Thanks everyone, and thanks to all those who voted for me in the wc!
No, I haven’t used blue prominently for a while now. Out of well over a thousand blends I’ve done I’ve actually only used blue prominently a couple of dozen times. It’s never really been an issue though, as those who have followed my work for a while (here and other places like cgtalk) know I always vary my palette and subject matter, sometimes wildly. In my last three posts at cgtalk, for example, I used no color at all
The entire color spectrum must always be fair game
