[ ALT ] + [ Left Click ] Not Working in Edit Mode

I’m using Blender 2.9 on a Windows 10.

When I try and execute “[ alt ] + [ Left Click ]” the button indicator at the bottom screen acknowledges this by saying “loop select” but won’t execute the action. I have to press “[ alt ] + [ shift ]” to individually select each, vertex, edge, face, etc.

It was working just fine yesterday but randomly decided to stop working. My computer is not even a year old and I didn’t notice any software or drive updates.

Anyone else having this issue and know how to fix it?

Upon closer inspection this function works in some files and not others with very basic objects in edit mode.

When I spawn a new sphere or cylinder it works. When I spawn a cube it doesn’t work.

Why would that be?
