I have been using DecalMachine for some time now. I’d like to know if any users have something similar to suggest, either paid or free addon. I feel like DecalMachine always acts weird upon new Blender installation, and its kind of buggy. Time for more options if there are any.
If you plan to create decals using a shader, the base principle is using Texture Coordinates - Object with an empty specified as source object. This gives you a vector which is basically local coordinates of the object with a shader relatively to the decal empty. Then, you can separate its XYZ components and, for example, use XY as UV of a decal texture and Z as depth mask. (or get the length of a vector and calculate a sphere of influence) The downside is that it is not easy to set up multiple decals. You’ll need Mix nodes for each
Alternative is just using planes (or other mesh objects) with transparent mask material. With something like Shrinkwrap modifier to fit them to surface
I like to place my decals in the shader tree using an empty to drive placement, and a node group that clips the distance the decal projects onto the surface. This way, I can mix the decal in the shader tree and all subsequent nodes will affect the decal in the same way they affect the rest of the surface. You can also use decals for masks and there are no problems you can come across with a mesh decal conforming to the surface.
But when I do use a mesh as a decal I always switch off the shadow and glossy rays so that they don’t cast a shadow on the object they’re supposed to be a part of.
Example below. The decal projector empty is the orange square that seperately defines the base colouring (blue, greys, etc) and a dirt/grunge map that were quickly painted in Gimp and projected downward to a distance that clips them to the top of the front mandible surfaces. I then lay edge shaders and other grunge, plus decals where I want them, on top.
I would run a scan on your system as the link goes only to a Gumroad Page of the addon…
but it only takes one person with a grudge or just that kind of person to complain about the website to Norton and it gets Flagged…
Not accusing Aman. Could be but I doubt he is responsible if anything is wrong at the page. He seems to have a good reputation here at BA.
Agreed. I’ve put that stuff in the expanding section below to be less intrusive.
more about that

Even honest “sharing” sites have so much activity by so many people that it is hard to police vs. bad actors and prevent intrusions. So users should have some caution. My post is to inform people of a potential problem so they can be cautious. Also, Aman might not know about this and want to contact Gumroad to fix it.

Community Reviews (0). This is not the result of such reports because there are no reports. So it is the result of Norton’s own analysis. Other big security companies have this ability and do this too. I can say that if something “Red X” bad was really here I would expect there to be reports.

I don’t like those “one person complained so stop the world” things either. Also “brigading”, I think it’s called, when bad actors flood something with false reports, reviews, etc. “Community reviews” are only a part of Norton’s system. High level warnings/blocks seldom happen without Norton’s own scans and extensive knowledge of bad actors and methods applied.

Instead of having faith in the divine goodness and invincibility of Gumroad (“link goes only to a Gumroad Page”) and the perfect angels with only good intentions who put things there, I’m going try visiting other Gumroad pages and see if there are warnings. Is the whole site flagged or just some parts? …
Main Gumroad page - green checkmark
Several random offerings from the 3D category - green checkmark
so it is just some parts.
