AMD's (ProRender) Plugin for Blender

It might still work. Recommended hardware usually means they are runnning their test on those hardwares.

Probably just means optimized for those cards upwards, I can run Radeon Rays and the example Path tracer on an AMD HD 5850. And pro render is based on Radeon rays. OpenCl 1.2 is so bloody old just about every card should be able to run it. Talking of which last time i checked Nvidia only officially support opencl 1.1 did they move to 1,2 in the end?

New cards like my Fire Pro W9100 16GB support opencl 2.1 or 2.2 i cant quite remember. So newer cards can do far more than their allowed right now not to break compatibility on old cards. But be warned just like cuda things have to move on, Opencl 2.0 minimum support with cycles and other engines would be a great thing for more capable cards at some stage.

arg. this is a headache. I really do need a new system. I was going to go with Intel but again now im not so sure. I was saving for a GTX 1060 but again im not so sure.
I guess i will have to wait to see the speed comparisons on similar cards.

I just ordered 2 RX 480 8gb. If Ryzen turns out close to an i7 8 core for half the price, I will be getting a complete AMD build.

If you’re using the GPU’s for rendering then you don’t need a 8 core cpu. A high frequency quad core is enough. Buy a third rx 480 for the money that is left

Not a bad idea, but I don’t think everything will work on the gpu, so having a good cpu would be good for backup or larger memory intensive scenes.

It seems that in the web blender and year appears! Or in the official web site of amd!

It is still in development but stay tuned for more details soon.

This was 2 weeks ago from their comment section…

Anyone hear anything on when prorender will be released? Would like to pick up some RX 480, but would like to test it out first.

Looks like fucking never, what a talentless marketing department at least tell a far date. I better go and buy Fstorm and a GTX.

Website…

Radeon ProRender for Blender - Alpha Release Features v1.1.0
Radeon ProRender (RPR) is an easy to use, physically accurate renderer you can use to render anything from nature to mecha to archviz. We’re pretty excited to be able to share this amazing renderer with you, and even though it’s still very much in Alpha, we hope you’ll like it as much as we do!
The Radeon ProRender plugin is fully integrated into Blender 2.78. It supports real-time changes to the scene and built in rendering information. It supports the Blender lights, materials, and textures and renders your geometry accurately. RPR also comes with a library of materials to get you started. 10 things we think you’ll love:
[Download a copy and see for yourself!](https://github.com/Radeon-prorender/Blender/releases)

The download page says, “There aren’t any releases here” (???)
Not a good sign.

There is a working version of prorender. There is no reason why AMD would make one and say “screw it, blender sux”.

Also they say it’s still in development.

But if you have a deadline with a client then buy an nvidia card and finish your work in an another renderer. Otherwise just wait and you’ll get another free renderer that you haven’t spent a single second at developing it.

There is a way to get prorender to blender by going here and fill in an application form:

http://pro.radeon.com/en-us/calling-all-blender-experts-apply-to-test-the-radeon-prorender-plug-in-beta/

There is mass of information and a tutorial how to use prorender in blender. Check it out.:yes:

Thanks for the link. Just did it. It’s not automatic, so let’s cross fingers.

It’s actually a bit worrying that they state you can use pro render without licensing deals, Pro Render was supposed to be Open Sourced back in October but still nothing. Lets hope they haven’t taken a step backwards on this and decided not to open source the system, but just release pre compiled libs. That would suck balls.

Worry not… it will be out, i assume along with new GP units - both stable. Since they had quite a bad experience lately. Afterall they’re simple human beings who decided to stop feeding the animals & trolls. :eyebrowlift2:

That’s factually false.

Blender’s support for OpenCL is capped at 1.2. Apple fully supports OpenCL 1.2 in macOS. Soon they’ll have 2.x support, along with GPGPU vendors, who currently don’t support OpenCL 2.x themselves [Nvidia, AMD and Intel].

On a side note, AMD not supporting Linux with ProRender, within Blender means it is dead to me.

“Apple dont properly support OpenCL”

That’s not a factual statement, that’s an opinion. Here’s my opinion on Apple GPU drivers: They suck.

Apple fully supports OpenCL 1.2 in macOS.

What does “support” mean? Everyone seems to have way more problems with Apple’s drivers (OpenGL and OpenCL) than AMDs own drivers on Windows.

Soon they’ll have 2.x support, along with GPGPU vendors, who currently don’t support OpenCL 2.x themselves

That’s factually false. Intel and AMD have shipped OpenCL2 drivers (whether they work well or not), NVIDIA has started adding OpenCL2 features in the latest drivers. Apple has nothing.

On a side note, AMD not supporting Linux with ProRender, within Blender means it is dead to me.

Don’t hold the funeral yet, they’re supposedly supporting it with Maya, so Blender may follow. Just don’t be surprised that the operating system with the smallest (but most obnoxious) userbase isn’t getting priority, especially considering how much of a pain it is to ship software for Linux (dozens of binary-incompatible distros are in active use).

Does this only run on AMD cards? I started to apply for the Beta test,
then realized I might not have the right hardware.

My laptop uses an NVIDIA GeForce 960-M, and I don’t see OpenCL in the specs.

No: “Hardware agnostic – if your computer can run OpenCL™ 1.2, it can run Radeon ProRender.”

However it may be harder to get into the Beta if you have an nVidia card, since I assume they maybe want to prove the performance of their cards
