So the animations are deformed in an extremely cartoon way without making it look like a huge dedornation. I cannot see if the cat had fur, but stretching the fur would have been a real issue. Maybe they had numerous sized paws with the same fur for when the paws comes towards the camera.
Not sure what you mean by that, but I sincerely doubt they are doing the projection distortion in the model itself.

The billboard itself is probably capable of a rather high pixel resolution, even then most are probably seeing it from at least 50 feet away (which helps greatly not only to sell the illusion, but also to minimize artifacts resulting from the distortion).

I suppose you are right about the detail … all I need now is a huge electronic billboard in my garden to test out a scene.

With a wide angle lens, I figure that one gets a quite satisfying effect without deforming the model.

Haha, this would be super expensive 
But as a workaround there is another difficult way.
You can get a very cheap projector for less than 100$ and do a “simulation” on how it would look like.
You can use a VJ software to customize the projection angle like this so you hit the billboard in the correct angle (just as the large screen would appear).
And then supposedly if the anamorphic render you created is nice, you would see the pseudo 3D effect.

Very impressive, I am wondering how far this would go? Every wall would become a screen eventually.
If only e-Ink technology was the norm then probably this technique would have been much more widespread. However now as e-Ink is only black-white and very expensive I doubt that if LED screens can be quite efficient, due to the electricity consumption and lightwave emissions.
