Did you model it so that the book could actually be opened or are these extrusions?
Also, is it important for the pattern on the ground to have that many edges? Or is it because of Blender doing stuff?

Yes, in order to be able to open, the pages are modeled. The pattern was vector, I imported it as SVG, the model is not a game and I was not worried about the density of the grid.
