Animated Short: Brook (One Piece)

Inspiration came from listening to Bach’s Chaconne and the heart-wrenching story behind it. Kinda fits into what’s been happening for the past couple of years.

Some stills:

And the obligatory wireframe:

I also wanted to do a project on Brook to compare to what I attempted almost a decade ago (2012) in Maya/Mental Ray (anyone remember this?).
I hope it’s within the rules to post stuff not made in Blender :grimacing:

I hope someone out there likes this.

I started this project almost 2 months ago, hobby project, so, not exactly full time on it.
The stills took around 5 - 6 mins using GPU Cycles rendering even with NLM denoising.

The animated frames on average took 5 mins per frame, even with the full scene shots, which was kinda surprising.
It’s probably due to the following:

  • Sacrificing detail where they’re not needed (ie, the ropes are a mess if you zoomed in on them)
  • Almost all textures were procedural, except for items like the lines on the violin body and the rum bottle label (which I thought was kinda clever  )

Thanks, glad you like it!

In the anime/manga One Piece, Brook is a very peculiar character, on the one hand, he’s supposed to be comic relief, but he also has one of the most depressing backstories.

It was a thought bubble of mine to re-imagine that point of his backstory.

very nice short. especially like the lighting.
