Hi all. Well, I’m making the most of my break, and getting right into modelling some characters for my project: a 3D-for-2D film. I downloaded a bunch of anime girl pictures for refence this morning at 3am, and have been modelling since. I’m kind of proud of where I have gotten to, so I am posting it here for comment: Untextured, and without arms and legs. I noticed a lot of anime girls have abs! And boy, does editing with faced make it easy to model a belly button!? Please comment. Would love feedback.
though the upper chest may need some work
How so? Nipples? They’re on their way. I spent some time modelling the collarbones, based on the references I had. Here are some wireframes and front/side renders for you:
Am trying to achieve the look of the airbrushed anime girl. They usually have very pronounced collar bones, and abs. Will add arms and legs in the next couple of days. Thanks for looking, so far! Ultimately, I wish to create the perfect anime body that can be reused.
Sorry I wasn’t more specific. I think the problem is that the breast seem to flow directly into the collarbone instead of breast into upper chest into collarbone. Even when considering the anime style the breast should really flow flatten out towards the collarbone and not be so ballooned in the upperchest.
In this same area I notice one thing with topology. The breasts should really have their lines flowing into the arms for proper human topology. While, your topology is acceptable and very good, it may not deform at optimam levels.
And while you go on to more joints, it is advisable to model them in a pre-bent fashion, because they will deform much better if they are already bent just a couple of degrees out of the straight/locked joint position so many people model in (including myself). This mainly refers to the shoulder and elbow.
Despite what I have said, your model is really quite good, and I look forward to seeing more updates. And if you need some help with proportions or anything, maybe look at polykarbon’s tutorials on drawing anime style.

Oh My God! How could I have missed this on all the searches I did for reference? Thankyou, Musicman for this link - it is proving invaluable! Also, thanks for the specifics in your post, too. While not extensive, here are some shots of the revisions: note I have tried to lower where the breasts start on the chest. This is difficult to do, without squashing the breasts down into ovals. Of course, I read alot of X-men during the 90’s where water balloon breasts were in, so forgive me if I feel the need to be nostalgic! Also: check her out from behind!
The back however, needs a little definition, mainly in the area of the shoulder blades. It seems like she has no shoulder blades is what the problem is. Though I’m guessing it might not look as akward once you add more of the shoulder and arm.
Other than that, looks pretty good, keep up the good work.
“3d for 2d”
Does that mean it’s going to be cel shaded?
If so, you’ll want to keep things simple. Realism will look like realism even if it’s cel-shaded. The point of cel shading is to make it look like an artist could have drawn every frame of the movie, no?
I gues you could ignore all that though if i misinterpreted what you meant…
Yep… here’s what it looks like with my special toon settings:
And a detail:
As for “simple” yes, I agree… but putting in some necessary detail helps give you a more sophisticated look. I am striving for the “anime girl” look that is more airbrushed than straight TV toon.
Take a look at this site to see what I mean. WARNING: some nudity to be found.
BTW she looks well-oiled
LOL! Yes… it is one of the dangers of the toon shading mode - it’s because you have to boost the specularity and increase the size factors by such unnatural degrees. As for settings, I will be more than happy to, though they are subtle variations on the Blender manual toon shading settings. I will put up screen shots as soon as I figure out how to capture screen in Windows XP… (any suggestions?)
File->Dump Screen is what I’ve been using…
Well, I learn something new every day! Truth to tell: I never bothered to look… So anyway, below you will find the settings. Just a tip: I have set up three lamps in a rough equilateral triangle around the model - typical key, fill and back light setup. Their power is around 0.800, and there is a spot (ray shadow only) from the direction of the key light. The lights (with the exception of the spot for the shadow) are all Sun lamps.
Good job on detailing for toon rendering. Don’t worry about getting her oily looking - that would be pure Shirow-style
As for the body, I have some problems with two areas. The most noticable is the lower leg/calves, that seems a bit… “stubby”? Also, the back of the thighs seem a little too rounded. Legs could have a slightly sleeker shape perhaps? Also, I’m pretty sure her arms are too long for her body.

Heheh, I hear ya! Loved ghost in the shell, and checked out your link - his work is awesome! It helped quite a bit in tweaking her. Here are the latest updated pics of the anime girl:
The hair was done using curves with both a bevel and taper applied to them. The bevel is a sort of rounded off half moon; the taper, half- a love heart shape. Also tweaked the eyes; the thighs have been brought closer (ala shirow style) and have added ears. Also: the eyes have been textured-mapped - the best way to get real Anime eyes, IMO.
