I have some XSI scenes and models I’d like to get into Blender but I don’t have access to XSI anymore so I can’t export it to something else first. Is there any way to get them into Blender? Thanks for any help.
I believe Polytrans may be able to handle it, but this isn’t a free option.
Haven’t personally tried this, but it’s on their format list. (When I had XSI I’d export directly as OBJ, but obviously not a solution for you now.)
Thanks! Great to know. This is just a couple small things for fun, not paying projects so I’ll see if there’s anything for free first, but I’ll check the prices.
Cheers!
Some of the online converters claim to be able to… but for example for some MAX files they didn’t convert anything at all and i had better results with FreeCAD… even when sometimes i had to re-position one or two objects…
You may have some luck with:
because…
I do not have any xsi files… so i can’t try…
Thanks for the info! I’ll check them out. Cheers.
I had the same problem as Len. Unfortunately the DotXSI Addon doesn’t work with regular .xsi files.
Does someone have another hint besides using Okino? Thank you!
There seems to was a mod tool from XSI… (~2014) see this old Valve web page…
https://developer.valvesoftware.com/wiki/Softimage_Mod_Tool
…the tool is still downloadable (? ; see extern links…)
…and then there are multiple (free) online converter ( never really worked for me…) using any name mixes of {3D,convert,\-}.{org,com} …
or paid ones… (special order ?? other are free ???)
or generally…
Thank you.
The main problem I have, is:
- I can’t reinstall XSI on my workstation
- The converting apps seem to support .xsi files only, I have “.scn” files which seem to be opened with the main app only. After this you can export .xsi files out of the main app.
Best wishes
Ohh… i wasn’t aware that there are explicit scene files… i thought like in 3DS Max ( .max) or blender (.blend) it’s the one and only format…
Well then maybe make a post with something like this:
Anybody with a working Softimage XSI out there ?
…as title ??
Thank you. I completely forgot the Mod Tool… The installation on windows 11 worked. Scene files up younger 2010 or 2011 are not working. But all older than 2010. Very good. The render engine seem also not to work. But I’ve have to check it out.
Good old times! ![]()
There are different softimage mod tools ?? ( I just saw it on the mentioned link and didn’t investigate this further… )
Thanks, I’ll give that a try out of curiosity. A kind person who still had XSI running offered to convert for me so that is done now. However it would be nice to have a robust way to do it in the future.
I also ran into the problem of only having .scn files which no conversion tool seems to work with.
The chances are slim that you get the Mod Tool working (licensing?/drivers/win32 based DirectX stuff etc…), as it is/was based on XSI 6.x/7.x
So unless you created all your scenes in that specific version of XSI, you probably cannot open your files anyway. And my memory is fuzzy on this, but didn’t it create a separate fileformat than the commercial one?
Oh… And only the Valve DL link seems enough “legit” to me for even trying to install this…
And if you do, there’s a nice hidden feature in Windows called [sandbox]
Or just use a VM just to be sure… ![]()
Like anything with Autodesk they will pull support updates or anything else that they want, and refuse to even talk about the product after they do so… they pulled out of Softimage XSI back in 2015 … and referred everyone to get Maya or 3d Max instead…
So to get it now since there were thousands of people left stranded, the Mod Databases started to provide the product…Steam, Valve, and Mod DB are all reliable places, but even so good protection is always recommended…
Ah, it couldn’t be that simple could it
Thanks for the info.
Oh… I know… Still mad about that one.
I got to terms with the buying of Arnold, as they have been developing it ever since. ![]()
@engart - if you still need help converting your old .scn files just let me know… I’m sure Softimage 2015 can open the ones that failed on Mod Tool. I’d be happy to convert them for you if its not that many.
Thanks! I really appreciate the offer. A kind person helped me already but it’s great to know those who can help for the future. In this case it was only a couple scenes for fun but I have some complex (at least for the day) aviation scenes. I have no use for them now but you never know when that could change. Those I would pay for conversion if needed but right now there is no requirement. Thanks a million to all that replied here, much appreciated!
It’s always nice to meet SI users. I miss it in many ways but I’ve found Blender more than a replacement and would never go back now that I’m getting used to it.
This is my little scetchbook of the fun scenes. Second one in progress.
