I just discovered all the awesome potential that OpenVDB has to offer primarily particle/point cloud to mesh conversions, etc. Before I plunge ahead into writing an add-on to do so, does anyone know if someone is ahead of me on this?
Here, yeah needs some more ![]()
Thank you, burnin! So far this is the only add-on I’ve been able to find. Looks like I may have a new project
Well, IMHO, the best thing for starters would be a modifier < considering the big picture > following everything nodes…

& you got your lifework ahead… free light
Ahhhhhh, job security! Game on!
Fantastic! Thank you!
Would anybody be able to point me in the right direction for adding OpenVDB to EEVEE? I’d love to get into the underlying data structures in Blender and I love the deep end
I wish I could be of more help to you on this, but I still haven’t been able to get Openvdb to even build…
I found this interesting page that has some overlaps, and some really cool animations!
http://nathanmitchell.graphics/project_pages/blender_openvdb/
And this is I guess the end goal, to have directly renderable VDB based data: https://developer.nvidia.com/gvdb
Good find! It amps up my confidence knowing that someone has actually pulled it off! I haven’t stopped trying, just got frustrated and used up my month’s quota of salty language.
Hi; I’m wondering if there’s been any progress on this. I’d be willing to contribute (I have a lot of sci viz experience as well as VFX, rendering, and image processing.) What’s the status of the GSoC project? What does it still need before being merged?
Stefan Werner is working on it. There is a ton of stuff to be done until it is production ready.
See https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HODMomxZilc
He is searching for people who can help - if you can, that would be great.
Thanks for the link to the presentation – that is really helpful. How can I contact Stefan?
I found his twitter.
