If you want specific advice, you’ll have to ask a specific question. Check out the character modeling tutorials, there are plenty of them around. Don’t limit yourself to just Blender tutorials, unless you still aren’t familiar with the interface and hotkeys yet, because tutorials for other packages contain a lot of good general advice on character development and modeling that is also useful in Blender.
About the only realistic answer to your vague question is: Yes, you need to know how to model characters!
