AO composite problem

1 background image,
1 cube,
1 plane. ZTransp, Only shadow, Alpha 0.5,
1 spot lamp

Without raytracing enabled, and using a Buf.Shadow Spot I get a shadow:

With raytracing enabled, and using a Buf.Shadow Spot I don’t:

And still don’t even with a spot using ray shadow:

As I understand it you need ray tracing enabled in order to use AO? So how do you composite shadows with it?

Is the shadow-only plain set top tracable?

Yes it is.

Plane has the material defaults, other than the changes mentioned above.
