Applying Material to selection?

Hey everyone,

I got yet another question: How do you apply a material/texture to a selection of polygons as opposed to the whole object. For example; I’ve selected a certain number of polygons on a icosphere, and wish to add a texture of an eye to it. I see no ‘apply to selection,’ button or any of the sort. So every time I render the scene, the whole sphere is textured as opposed to just the polys I selected.

Please note I’m new to this, so if I’m doing something stupid, take it easy on me.
