yeh? the iron city/tower what ever? nah this looks kewl-er ^^ (meaning the lotr is just a wuss when compared to this magnifficent tower-beast!!!)
Since you asked via PM…
I don’t really have a good way of explaining this, but here goes…
A tube or cylinder is one of the strongest shapes that you can have in compression (or squashing), which is why so many towers etc are built in this way - so that the sides of the tower can support the weight of the top. In contrast, what you have here is effectively a lot of flat plates arranged in a circle and - as far as I can tell - not joined together except at the centre. Now, flat plates are one of the weakest shapes you can have in compression because they will buckle out to the side (get a flat sheet of paper and push the edges to see what I mean) - any flat steel sections you might notice in a building will actually be being used in tension for stability.
So, let’s look at just one of the radial walls of your tower; the force of the top would make it bend outwards as shown in the very shoddily drawn little sketch below.
The underneath diagram shows what I would do were this given to me as an architectural design - i.e. put some beams in around the edges of the tower to hold the plates in place and stop them from behaving in this manner.
Seriously though I wouldn’t worry about any of this; I’m only going into it in such detail since you specifically asked. What you have at the moment looks cool and it’s not the sort of thing that’s going to bother anybody bar an anal retentive engineering student such as myself. In any case the extent of the problem depends on what materials you use - since this is a fantasy tower you could just say it’s made of some kind of super-strong enchanted metal and get away with it.
Well, it could be a floating building. It looks like a futuristic gothic style building, and it would be cool if it was floating in mid-air. The fly-through is awsome!
Looks great! I like the glass and the overall style. Only critique is that it looks too monocromatic. I think that adding some accent colors would make it look sharper.
does monocromatic mean dull or one coloured?
what textures do you think I should use (give me a large range so I can post them and compare)?
monocromatic means one colored. I just thought it would look better than if the whole thing were black/gray glass. The glass style looks good, so you might try making a few of the outside panels or parts a different color to make them stand out a little more. As for colors/textures, blue would be my first choice of an accent color, but its your tower. Do whatever you think looks best.
That’s what I was saying; making parts of it blue or different colors will make it look better.
You could try for a stone texture
I think he means material, not texture. punch me in the stomach if I’m wrong.
I meant both materials and textures ( a link to the textures that you mean would be helpful)
So could someone give me a long list, I will upload an image again tonight.
nb) Is it prossible to add a metallic texture and at the same time have reflection on or is this only possiblewith nodes in a more recent build.
I didn’t have any particular textures in mind. You can find some by sites with textures by looking here: http://www.blender3d.org/cms/Resources.181.0.html
BTW, you can add any texture and keep reflection on.
Twisted Fate Parted dreams.
Right here is the Gist of the story without giving it all away. Good vs. Bad, at start, Bad seemly destroyed but lead figure (woman) vanishes. Use of a tower to help defeat the enemy. On the disappearance of the woman the villagers see it as a bad omen and don’t realise the truth.
An army sweeps across the continent burning down any villages that they find, an encounter causes them heavy casualties so they are coming here to attack and gether resources…
Raid on town, many villagers killed, 2 main characters involved…
Serena and ….(will find an appropriate name.)
Something happens between them (nothing kinky just not giving the plot away)
Some kind of test for the boy,
Will think up the rest later, I am writing a book in larger detail, so far this is all that I have done. This is a fantasy world. I need to decide on a religion if any.
There will be 5 towers. The one here is Spirit, The others are after the elements so fire, water, earth, and air.
So will create the sigils for each along with the towers.
Need to learn how to model a human (I know this animation project seems like an impossibility but I have 10 weeks summer holidays which could be quite borring)
Rigging, decent animation, IPO curves, Music I can manage on my own, voice dubbing could be difficult, but I think I can manage, Modelling a city will be fun, will look at the minus tirrith project and elder scrolls 3 and 4 for ideas.
Lighting has always been a major problem but hopefully someone can help me when I have done all the exteriors of the buildings. Grass……I will need to look into.
I am not asking anyone for help in my project, If I mange to get more than half way in this then I will ask as getting that far turns it away from my imagination into a reality…
Ideas I look forward from hearing from you….(hopefully)
Right already started other buildings, here is the structure of a roof and the wall from which I can vary (the tiles ) so that every building is different.
If there is anything I need to change, tell me; Paul J, your knowledge will be useful here. The wall hasnt been completed yet, this is only a cross section of the beams and the tiles making up the roof.
Will now make windows and doors. And try and make as many different kinds as possible. Once they have been done to perfection under your criticism I will release the Blend files.

Nope. I suspect many of the towers in that were made with spin tools Actually, it kinda reminds me of that crystal castle in one of Arnold’s Conan films. Though maybe more from the inside, than the outside.
Looks good! I took a class where part of it was designing a bridge in a computer program called Bridge Builder. It would simulate all the physics of cars going over it, and we had to build a bridge as cheap as possible and still stand. The architecture of the new building looks good to me!
Sounds like an awesome project, but thats going to take a ton of work! I’d love to see it completed though. The storyline sounds good, and it would be really cool to see all that done with blender. Go for it!
Can anyone give me insight for develloping windows for this structure. I have created a space between the beams (cross beams will be created to support the weight) and it would be possible to fit smaller windows between the beams. Would that be better?

That frame design looks absolutely fine to me.
As far as stability in the other direction goes you have a few options other than cross bracing that might let you put in bigger windows:
‘Rigid’ construction: i.e. having really big thick joints between the beams that can resist bending forces. Not usually done for structures of this type because the joints are very expensive and heavy. I’m also not sure if it would be ‘historically accurate’; I think it might not be possible with wooden structures as wood has a lower shear resistance than steel.
End-bracing: i.e. putting in external supports at the ends of the building. Might look a bit messy on the outside, but it depends on the architectural look you’re going for.
Shear Wall: Having a big thick wall somewhere in the building that can prevent the structure collapsing. Usually made of concrete but I guess masonry would work as well if it were thick enough. For example, most skyscrapers have a big thick concrete ‘core’, usually around the lift shaft.
It all depends on the look and purpose of the building you have in mind.
