Road trip, Canadian Rockies
Hello. This is the start of a new series focusing on environment design and lighting, following an RV through various landscapes. The focus here was on environmental storytelling and grounding the vehicle in the landscape. I spent quite some time dialing in the ground scatter and adding lived in details while trying not to overwhelm the scene.
I’ve included two versions of renders: a clean hero edit to showcase lighting and atmosphere, and a vintage/filmic edit to capture that nostalgic, found photograph road trip vibe.
I keep getting ed, and looking at the image again I think I figured it out.
The camper has a couple tells that got me:
It doesn’t have any dents. I’ve never seen a motor camper without a dent somewhere, not even new ones.
The lines are too clean. Everything is perfectly straight and aligned. IRL that doesn’t happen either. (That is one beautiful bumper, for example!)
It is lacking real-life greebling — small stuff along the sides and above the wheel well and weird doors and latches and stuff. Textures on the lamp covers are too plain, missing the criss-cross reflector design and circular holes where screws hold them on and stuff.
I understand it is low-poly (and it’s gorgeous and truly nostalgia -inducing, really!), but even with the awesome dirt map it is just too clean in as realistic an environment as in the picture.
(The bald eagle’s wing-shape gets me too. They don’t tend to form that sloping downward V shape. Rather, they tend to have a bit of a recurve to them, even when lifted high.)
I still love the picture. I just figured out what struck me as not-quite-right.
Nice work. The camper is a design choice for you. For me it doesnt look grounded and that may be the shadows. You might have some lights changing the shadow pattern that would be expected based on the sun position? In first image sun is behind camera based on tree shadows but shadow of camper suggest main light source is in another position.
Thank you.
There isn’t any secondary light, it’s only Nishita Sky Texture and it’s coming from right back side of the camera. I don’t see how you think camper’s shadow suggests otherwise.
