Atmosphere and Realsim

Looking at this, I am wondering how you did the fog. Did you have trouble making it? I am asking because I seem to be seeing some weirdness around the wood poles to the right, like there is a slight compositing or denoising problem.

If it’s volumetric fog, that would be understandable, because it’s hard to denoise well. When I make fog, I render it as a separate pass, denoise it separately and then composite it back on the main render. Fog denoises much better and smoother separately (and requires fewer samples, renders faster).

This requires knowledge of view layers, transparent background renders with holdouts, and the compositor to achieve.

This is a bit complicated and I am not sure you will understand this scene, but here is an example of what’s possible. Just hit render, the fog is auto-rendered separately and composited.

Yeah its a principled volume with two color ramped noises added together.

Any youtube or other tutorial recommendations on separate render passes?

Here is the best one I could find. This one even goes one step further, it uses Blender’s “scenes” feature to render the main scene in Cycles and the fog in Eevee at the same time and combine them together.

It’s a bit outdated, but should work the same apart from a few Eevee settings that have slightly changed.

This tutorial uses Eevee for the fog, but you could use the same technique with Cycles, rendering the fog separately still helps even if you aren’t in Eevee.

I like the atmosphere and color setup. Focus point is well defined by source of light. Realism needs some work - fog suggests high humidity, there should be wet, glistening wooden planks, wet leaves, etc. Also, this fog on the left is too dense. Overall, this looks good, even if some improvements are needed.

Rethink your scaling…compare the boat with the dock and especially the ropes on the dock, the boat/canoe is very small …also the shadowing and placement of the boat seam to be floating above the water surface as the Dock shadow is below the boat and the boat is allowing light to creep under it…there is just something un-real going on there…
