Benny and the Jets by Elton John - What does it mean?

I just downloaded this awesome song by Elton John called Benny and the Jets -
The music and the lyrics are very awesome if you ask me, but this was written like in 1973, so maybe it references some things that I don’t know about since that was before my time.

I was wondering if anyone else has some perspective on this song thank you.

Music by Elton John
Lyrics by Bernie Taupin
Available on the album Goodbye Yellow Brick Road

Hey kids, shake it loose together
The spotlight’s hitting something
That’s been known to change the weather
We’ll kill the fatted calf tonight
So stick around
You’re gonna hear electric music
Solid walls of sound

Say, Candy and Ronnie, have you seen them yet
But they’re so spaced out, Bennie and the Jets
Oh but they’re weird and they’re wonderful
Oh Bennie she’s really keen
She’s got electric boots a mohair suit
You know I read it in a magazine
Bennie and the Jets

Hey kids, plug into the faithless
Maybe they’re blinded
But Bennie makes them ageless
We shall survive, let us take ourselves along
Where we fight our parents out in the streets
To find who’s right and who’s wrong

From wikipedia.

wow how stupid of me, I searched online but just not wikipedia and I go there all the time

oh well, thanks

it is also a comment on the use of uppers and downers in the music industry.

Hey kids, plug into the faithless

We shall survive, let us take ourselves along
