Bevel a curve/text without it fattening / expanding

Hi there, I’m sure I tried to find a solution to this before, but a quick search turned up nothing.

Basically, if you extrude/bevel text or a curve object using the geometry panel, the bevel seems to work by expanding the outer edges and leaving the faces the same, but what I want ideally is the result you’d get from the bevel modifier, ie the corners are shaved off without fattening the object.

Basically is there a good way of bevelling text without converting to a mesh and retopologising?

Have you tried tweaking the offset value in ‘geometry’ (above the extrude).

Yeah I think this is how I did it previously, it works so long as I don’t push the values too much. I think there’s maybe some weird things going on with the way the curve of the text is made.
