Bevel inside a bezier instead of outside


I’m pretty new to Blender but not to 3D modelling, and I have a question I’m hoping someone can help me with.

I have traced a couple of shapes with bezier curves that I need to extrude & bevel. Extruding & bevelling works fine, but the bevel is added to the outside of the defined curve, distorting the shapes and their relationship to each other. Is there any way to tell Blender to do the bevel inside the curves instead?

I have failed to find an answer via Google or the forum search, but this may be my inability to select the right search terms.

Maybe extrude it, then convert to a mesh (Alt + C) then bevel with the mesh script ‘Bevel Center’ in the Scripts panel? Is that what you’re looking for?
