bezier curve probem(newbie)

hi
I am newbie in using blender(or any other 3d tool)

If i place bezier curve i cannot modify all three directions.
for example if I place bezier curve from front view, I can modify X and Z position of verticles, but if I change to top/side view and try to move position of verticles in Y sector, I cannot cannot.

Do I need to do something to that curve before i can change third dimension or is there bug?

I am using Blender 2.40alpha1

press F9 which goes to edit buttons, then click “3d” (next to back and front) in the Curve and Surface tab
