Blended Reality: Char Game model contest, 23 people, started

Has anyone thought of texture rules?
Should we all use the same size/number of maps?

EDIT: Just for the main model that is, I don’t think it really matters about the other objects.

clearly the rules need to be refined more, but I would expect a requirement like

no more than two 512x512 pixel square textures can be used
[I am using a 256x256 pixel texture for the windows… oh well]

however, changing the rules now would be a bit … umm, well it just shouldn’t happen

so, for everybody’s mesh it would be nice to see their rig, a wire, their textures and some basic stats
size of each texture
number of triangles in the mesh [as visible in the decimator]

for me:
2150 triangles
two 512x512 textures for body, one 256x256 [likely to become smaller] reflection mapped texture for windows.

of course, this is subject to change. I will not be painting my textures at their final resolution…

oh, and is using the LSCM unwrap tools in tuhopuu illegal?

Correct me if I’m wrong but from what I’ve read up to know it seems that the contest is only going to judged on images of the characters. Does this mean that we don’t have to post the blends? If this is the case I’m a little disappointed because I’m spending more time on the action of my character than the textures as this is what I do best.

For me the action of the characters is one of the most important aspects of a game. Admittedly the appearance is important too but there’s no use a character having great textures then just sitting around looking dumb.

If we don’t have to post the blends how will the judge/s tell if all the rigging works properly?

Here some more info. About textures, I didn’t think about that one, but it seams that the max can be 512 for the game engine, so if we can stay on that size, it would be nice. The number of textures that are allowed on 1 model, well that’s your choice.

About posting the presentation picture of the model to judge, well we can do it so, you are allowed to post the blend file too. The reason why I didn’t include that was because I dind’t know if the creators of the model wanted to share them with the community. If they don’t want that, you could make a runtime file with a password protected python script that I have here on my pc to disallow open the runtime in blender. So you can make the character dragable or rotate it realtime to show.

I’ll work on the final post rules to end the contest, so it’s more clear to everyone how to do an official final post for the character. 8) Idea’s are welcome. :stuck_out_tongue:

so … now we got to make the model an actor with phisics,walk animation,etc??..

whats the minimum of actions to put on the armature?
i figure at least a walk and stand cycle right?

Let me suggest to those in this contest and those judging it some guidelines:

Entries should be one or two pictures showing:

At least two different angles

of the character in

At least two different poses.

ALSO a wire frame shot, that should show clearly the skeleton.

LASTLY the picture should say somewhere how many Tri’s the model has as shown in the decimator.

Addition rules:

  1. If there is a dispute about the validity of the pictures being directly from blender, a .blend will be required to be inspected by the competition organiser.

  2. No gamelogic is part of the competition.

  3. A good pose will show how good the armature set up is, and so those counting on their armature set up getting them points should design a good pose. No .blend should be involved in the process.

  4. Textures: as there has been no specification of textures, it means any uncopyrighted picture or photo can be used, therefore minimal rules apply. There should be no limit as to how many textures or as to the size of textures. A beginner will find it very difficult to put all the tuxtures on one correctly sized texture and so rules to this effect would discourage earlier users from entering.
    As blender is not great at modifying textures, any external process may be used concerning the textures.

  5. There is a roof of 3000 tris. However, you will more likely impress judges with a very good 1000 tri model.

Could the organiser please go through these rules to check these are ok.

It started Monday, so far as I know, but if you’re good, you should still be able to have it done in time and with adequate quality. I’ve personally only spent one hour on mine now, after today, and I’ll spend quite a bit more soon.

I will try to animate it some tonight so you can see what the rig is capable of. as I don’t feel there is much that people can get from stealing this without making it clearly visible they stole it I will put the .blend online too.

the textures were created in both photoshop and blender. the front seat’s texture and wheels’s textures were done in blender. the whole reflection texture was made in blender too.

I tried to paint it in upaint [I even modified my .psk export to allow it] but it simply crashed so much.

I have learned a lot about texturing and would do a lot better job next time
[but it could only be so good as I have only spent 3 hours really on the textures outside of creating the blender ones]

I didn’t get any props or background stuff done like I wanted, but I’m out of time. With the holiday my weekend is already spoken for.
So I stayed up way past my bed time to bring you…the New Robin Hood!

I did the stupidest thing and saved the model as quit.blend since blender crashed and thats how I revoered it… I guess that what I get for being stupid.

Thanks for hosting the contest JD-multi. Even if I don’t do any good I’m glad I took part. It’s given me the incentive I needed to knuckle done and study some character making techniques. In the past I’ve generally steered away from animated characters because I wasn’t very good at it, but I’ve enjoyed it very much and really learned a lot.
