After hearing about the FREE Truespace 7.6, I wondered, which is more powerful, Blender or Truspace. Personally I think Blender, but that decision is baised, because i don’t know how to use Truespace. After seeing examples of Truespace’s Character animation, I think it may be better then Blender’s, but Blender’s community and tutorials are 100X bigger. So, what do you think?
Sorry if this topic has been picked at before, haven’t been here in a while and haven’t seen any theads talking on this yet. I might have missed one.
I was a trueSpace loyalist for years, and believe me blender is more powerfull…but both are free so why not use both. the only thing I use tS for is maybe(MAYBE)roughing in shape, then off to blender. My site has tutorials to get you from blender to tS, wich are free.
Well, that’s like comparing a Space Shuttle with a bicycle. If you’ll ask guys in NASA they will tell you that is Shuttle more powerful, on the other hand if you will ask guys in the bicycle club they will say that is bicycle more powerful, because they can not win a bicycle race with a Space Shuttle. Of course it’s also important for what you will use it, if you need a quick jump to buy a chewing gums in the near shop - use bicycle & if you would like to go into the Space - use Space Shuttle. So, on short, both have its cons and pros.
things I know from experience…
the "-(minus sign)"annotates negative to the aforementioned note.
tS has already had a re-write, therefore a good foundation
-1)they did it first and made the mistakes for blender, lightwave(core) to learn from
(this will show more in the next few years)
2)tS is easy to model in due to the support for Ngons.
-2)gets slow with higher poly models, not all tools are even implemented yet…in a sense it is in the same posistion as Blender 2.5.
-3)no native support for rendering in workspace side(WTF!)???
4)it has a simplified UI
-4)it has a simplified UI=difficult to do the good stuff.
-5)rigging(for me)is non intuitive when it comes to setting up the IK.
-5)not as powerfull as blender 2.48(at all)for animation.
-6)no particle system
-6)hair only colides with it’s emitter(that’s it)
cloth is quite fast, faster than blender.
-7)not much to tinker with, and cloth has a bit of “jitter” when it rests on something.
-8) Caligari or tS(one of them) is the property of Microsoft.
-9)no news on new development.
-10)I can keep going on negative statements.
Don’t take this list as what you should base your opinion on, try it for yourself, you may get something out of it…It just lacks too much for my use…
also, this is just off the top of my head so…take it at that.
As soon as I opened Truespace. I was lost completely. After using Maya, 3Ds Max, then Blender. I didn’t know how to do anything in Truespace and the fact that there isn’t enough good tutorials out the for Truespace like there is for Blender.
I thought that was the whole purpose of Microsoft buying TrueSpace, just to be an answer to Google and Sketchup. The big problem as I see it is that Google has Google Earth (and Lively until it was canceled) to drive development, provide a community, and generate interest in the software. Microsoft doesnt really have anything like that, so TS may be destined to end up like Live Search and Hotmail…An also-ran product that manages to be both bloated and underpowered compared to its Google alternative.
I don’t feel it is worth the speculation at this point. I open it up once in a while…and inevitably close it…then…DBL click the little orange icon and get back to work. It has a ton of potential, but it’s not where blender is now, and that is the problem. Make a note that the blender GLSL game rendering(not in engine, but modeling window)looks better and is faster.
Do not be hasty to dismiss Truespace so easily .I have found several posts comparing the two. TS users dismiss Blender as very difficult to use almost not very productive and other see it as a nice suplement to TS but always a second choice that they rather avoid, because of the difficult interface or some features that are better implemented in TS.
I have worked abit with TS from the earlier versions ( mostly version 4) , it is much easier to use than Blender. And I really like its modeling and UI. Also TS show alot more at viewport rendering than blender. My advice is the same as a previous post , use both. You have nothing to lose.
I hugely disagree with Cekhunen , TS was always developed to be a complete 3d app , sketchup is no match for it. Comparing the two is a joke eventhough Sketchup has some coll modelling features. TS is one of the oldest 3d apps out there . TS never managed to compete as much as Blender can with big 3d apps but it was one of the favourites none the less for beginner 3d artist , if not the MOST Favourite. But it still a powerful app , just take a look at TS gallery , there are some truly amazing stuff.
I am not using both since I am on a MAC. But may start using it through Parallels or Crossover , but I doubt that it will run smoothly.
Until TS comes to MAC , blender will be favorite choice.
tS had mac versions up until 4 I think, but …no one was biting. I think blender is better, but as I stated before…see for yourself and then decide for yourself.
I did not know that … actually even hardcore TS users admit that Blender has more features and that is alot more complete 3d package, but “better” I guess is a matter of perspective.
I would say that TS is more pleasant to the eye , but Blender is certainly a better 3d app . TS used to be top notch but after version 4 or something Caligari stoped chasing the big guys and started to slow down the evolution of TS. But still is a very good recomendation , however certainly is not the Truespace of the past that everyopne talked about . The new kid on the block is certainly blender.
But still TS can be a perfect suplement to Blender.
