Blender 2.5 Development Updates

…nothing more to say.

Icons are what they are, you don’t like them, then you can change them in the icon map, no need to cry about it hehehehe

Q. Do you like check boxes? _ tick_

If you don’t like the current ICON set - then you’re in Luck! Blender is an OpenSource
community - where the best solutions wins the hearts of the many, so if you have
something better up your sleeve - commit it and show us your stuff!

Man, I hope to God that they adopt Reynish’s design for the end product. It looks soooooo sexy. Fingers crossed!!

Agreed, I like them the way they are now, cause check boxes have in fact always been buttons,
which in most applications have just been visualized weird.

I’ve found myself liking it very much, as well.

If there’s nothing better to argue about, then the developers must be doing a GOOD JOB.

I love the new interface, there are a few button changes, like C is now circle select, but that kinda makes sense.

Anyway i’m very much looking forward to trying out the new 2.50 interface, which ever way the devs go i’m sure it’ll be an amazing addition to blender and i’m sure it’ll cause quite a stir

That’s a very good way to think about it.

Too many pages to read back over for now, but I have been following this thread on and off…

Do I understand correctly that raytracing in Blender is more or less getting ported over to the new core of 2.5 with the idea that it will be easier to update / optimise etc in future releases? I can be patient, just wondering where that was at. Apologies for the lack of research before the question. :o

Well, I don’t really know but I’d guess that the renderer probably is not tied to the event code so much so,
that porting it over to new system would change it all too much.

thats just a quess though.

The 2.5 project doesn’t really have much specifically to do with rendering - the work that’s done on cleaning up the internals of the interface doesn’t apply to the render engine internals. That doesn’t mean it won’t be worked on as part of other projects, but it’s not a 2.5 target.

Cheers broken,

Figured as much but thought I’d ask anyway. Clarity and all. Keep up the good work all!

I like the new UI:)

If I understand correctly, one of the goals of 2.5 release is " everything animable ". I want to know if the interface will have some rapid acces to animated parametes like Modo have? In Modo, into the left side of each field is a little button, colored in concordance with the animation status of the coresponding parameter and if you click on this little field is opening a graph editor window. It would be very useful to have a such option also in Blender.

Just out of curiosity,

I just realized that I am spending hours on making movies and that
those are all done with the current interface.

How much will the new one be different than the old? Just a little
or will the concept of the GUI be very different which would render
those movies difficult to follow?

Claas

ch dont worry. just give the version of blender your movies were made with along with the videos. you dont have to use the latest release to get good results. how long did blender stick with python 2.5? the reality is if an ovder version of software does everything you need and does it as well (or in this case better since the goal is following a tutorial) then just use the old version. there are many examples of this. many people use xp rather than vista because sometimes older is better.

That is indeed true.

Well incase the difference is just between lets say horizontal and vertical buttons than it
will not be a major problem.

It just struck me today that I spend roughly 20 hours per week making those movies and
after a semester it would be a bad surprise when most movies are hard to apply to the
new version / interface.

I find many older tutorials useful still, even though Blender has changed quite a bit since then. Even though some of the buttons have changed, many of the principles are still valid. So if you make the videos now, they will most likely still be very useful once the new UI is instituted.

Just to be honest, I think your energy will be better spent if the future videos are done in 2.5.

I agree that the ones you’ve done can be followed, since I don’t think the interface will change too much. But some people need to see things exactly the way they see them in their own Blender. I remember explaining someone some simple tasks, like adding a subsurf modifier, making it visible on 3D view, making the manipulator visible and use the different orientations. My buttons window was vertical, and my theme was rounded and with different colors than the default one. that person didn’t understand a couple of pretty simple tutorials and instructive pictures I made, and I think those simple changes had something to do with that.

For someone completely new to Blender it may be better to see things as closer as possible as they see them on their screens.

You are doing great material, and 2.5 will need that kind of efforts. If it’s possible to delay those videos just a couple of month (maybe until a “beta” version of 2.5?) it may be better in the long term for Blender.

However, I believe they will be useful anyway.

cek just keep making your tutorials. 2.5 is suposed to be very customisable, just nake a tutorial for 2.5 on how to set it up to look like 2.4. people can still learn alot, and most of what they learn will transfer over. once they get the concepts and learn the tools it will be easy to transfer that skill over. if you learn how to use a wrench to flix a car you’ll still know how to use the wrench on a bicycle or motorcycle. i dont think it’ll be a waste for you or those that watch your tutorals.

by the way are these videos public by any chance?

would be nice as a input method for floating windows to double click right in the corner instead of dragging.
