Blender 2.8 Tip : Rotate Quads on any mesh by 45 Degrees

A way to make ordinary geometry on any Quad-based mesh change it’s layout.

I was trying for hours to figure out how to do this. Thanks so much, it’s exactly what I needed!

you could also use a subd modifier set to “simple” instead of “catmull-clark” followed by a decimate modifier set to “un-subdivide” and iterations 1. just in case you would like to keep it non-destructive.
