well 2.49 is about the most stable software I’ve ever used… 2.5 is alpha, so crashes have to be expected…
the release cycles for blender all tend to be meaty affairs… though there are quite a few areas that blender is lacking in…
whenever I use maya for a client i find it evil and bugridden and crashy and arbitrary in what works one day breaks the next… bt then all my clients ave heavily customised maya… so that’s usually where the bugs lie…
it is actually quite stable (2.49). 2.5 is in beta.
In its current state Blender can do a lot Maya can do with all its plug-ins
but Maya can do more than Blender can do.
And that is simply a fact. To argue about it is silly. Otherwise everybody would use
Blender and ditch Maya. From the particle system, to animate everything, to professional render engine support.
One aspect many simply do not consider for Blender in the commercial application
is also user support and development guarantee. Last one adresses your 2nd point.
Regarding Endi’s point, maybe they learned concepts with Blender and also apply those
to the 3d application used at their new work place.
Plus since Blender is free it just enables all the 3D interested without the need to buy Maya
to satisfy their hobby interest in 3D. It comes natural that then there are a lot of hobby
3D artists as well.
I have to agree! Blender 2.49 is working very stable.
I do use Blender at work. And it works fine! At the moment I am the only one using it, but the other guys see that blender is capable to create great work!
I think blender could be easily part of a production pipeline. I love it to model in Blender. Sculting, Retopoing and then baking normals to lowpoly! This result you can use perfectly in other software. I think you just have to see what you need. If you work with many people/studios togehter, I think it will be hard to only use blender. Because blender isn’t industry standart. But if you have a small studio, or create everything within your studio and don’t have to collaborate with other studios why not use blender if it is suitable!
I love Blender, and I think blender has a bright future!!! If not for big companies, than for smaller studios who create great work too!!
Yes, I guess most users are youngsters wanting to design their own game, geeks with a flair for 3D graphics and quite a few 3D freelancer professionals. Professionals working in studios don’t get much of a chance to choose their own tools.
Which version of blender are you talking about? Blender 2.49b never crashes for me unless I go above two million polys. And my computer has only 3gb ram. Blender 2.5 crashes alot but that is a beta version
Minor updates are more useful. That way you can download the new feature and use it to make your project better. Anyone who starts a project that they can’t complete with the tools at hand, well thats their fault!
maya can do more than blender in some areas it’s true, in that we agree…
your argument is a fallacy though. even if blender can do everything that maya does and more besides, that wouldn’t by itself make everyone “jump ship” to blender…
there are many reasons that maya is used more than blender, and capability isn’t even close to being the biggest barrier…
the lack of a large pool of skilled and available workforce in Blender, heavy pipelines and in house customisations on top of Maya that would take time and money to switch to different Dcc… lack of training programs and materials… “fear, uncertainty and doubt” about the licencing and what it means in real terms…
trying to persuade a bunch of maya professionals to stop what they’re doing and re-train for six months in blender so they can do what they already know how to do in maya just doesn’t make any sense… Blender would have to offer a substantial benefit above and beyond what maya + z-brush + a host of plug ins can do…
being free and libre probably isn’t enough of a carrot…
In my experience, Blender 2.49 almost never crashes (unless I am trying to do something stupid) while 3ds Max crashes almost all the time. Blender is very stable.
At my school they taught us to use 3ds Max and Maya. I taught myself to use Blender and it became my package of choice due the workflow ( I prefer it to these other programs, not saying it’s better) the rate at which new updates come out, and the price tag since I am a poor college graduate. I don’t see myself switching to a new package unless I have to. With the progressions in Collada format I hope I never will have to.
There’s a trick to that, whenever you manage to crash blender you figure out exactly what you did and report it on the bug tracker.
One would think that blender crashing A LOT would lead to A LOT of useful bug reports.
The major 3D apps are being released once a year with all features fully implemented, Blender is constantly being updated but every update is only minor from the last. You can’t go “It was delayed because Bmesh is not here yet” on a serious job.
Yeah, yeah, blender will never be usable ‘on a serious job’ until it has ngon support…
Pretty sure people don’t have to promise never to use 2.49b or earlier versions just because they start using 2.5x. Yes it sucks that modeling isn’t quite as good as in 2.49b - but practically it doesn’t matter very much.
As to crashing - that is usually due to a crappy graphics card or drivers. Blender is generally the most stable 3D software of them all. Also there are currently almost no crash reports in the tracker - so if it has crash bugs then you should report them, they are typically the easiest thing to fix.
I have produced two feature films, one shot in video the other in film. Film had all of the mystique and ooooooooh you shot film? You know what, when it was all done, the film shot in video had a better story and people liked it more, they could CARE LESS about the eye candy. When’s the last time you heard someone reject a great painting because they didn’t use oils vs. acrylic etc.
The tool needs to be good enough that people aren’t distracted by it, it needs to be stramlined enough that you don’t waste your time due to poor workflow, but other than that IT DOESN’T MATTER. What’s your subject/composition/story is 90% of everything. I use blender because I can get my art through with it. I used to use lightwave and 3ds etc I think blender will win out in the long run because more artists can do 3d with it and the next Mozart of the 3d world may not work at Pixar.
