So I have been rotating canvas in 3d view in BL 4.1.0 using CTRL+ALT+MMB - but it does not work in 4.2.0:
What am I missing here?
Restore button means that your 4.1 keymap is not a default keymap.
Except for GP grid or Dynamic paint, the word “canvas” is not used by default, for something in 3D View, in blender.
So, you were probably using an addon in 4.1 ; that you did not re-install to use it in 4.2.

I think you refer to shortcut that was registered by Grease Pencil Tools add-on. You need to install it from Get Extensions in preferences.
