Blender Animation Challenge #2 Entries CLOSED [CHECK ENTRY LIST]

Hello

and welcome to round #2 of the blender animation challenge.
Today’s task and base file are provided by Kiopaa.

Thank you Kiopaa for your work and we hope that everyone has fun working with the file :).

The Task is:
The character need to get to the next platform.
You are free to do this anyway you want. This includes letting him fail in a spectacular way
Be creative!

The duration of the animation should be at least 10 seconds and may be as long as you want. Keep in mind that you only have 4 weeks.

The base file:
BAC_kiopaa_BaseFile.blend (215 KB)
Here is a fixed version by malefico
BAC_kiopaa_BaseFile_maleficoFIX.blend (220 KB)
The files are provided under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/) license.

To make it easier to participate and to improve participation we changed the rules slightly.

  • All entries must be made with Blender.
  • we provide a base file (Blender 2.48) with the rigs and necessary properties.
  • You may change the camera position and the direction of the light if it suites your animation. You may add more lights and cameras if you deem it necessary for your animation but keep in mind this is a animation not a lighting challenge.
  • You may change the size of any of the assets as well as the main characters. Please do not change the character itself but if you do please keep to the license.
  • You may animate the scene as you see fit this includes all assets.
  • You may duplicate any of the assets if it fits your animation.
  • You may remove any unneeded assets or characters.
  • You may do as many shots as you need but keep in mind that every shot you add will mean more work and will take longer to animate.
  • You may not add textures or add new meshes except for duplicating existing once. Remember this is an animation challenge and not a modelling, material, texture and lighting challenge.
  • You should not change the rigs. Changes are allowed if the rig is broken or doesn’t work as expected. If you do change the rig you are required to inform the community by posting your changes or informing the host of the contest. This is to give everyone the same chance and let others learn from your improvements. Please keep to the provided license!
Again this is an animation challenge and not a rigging challenge.
  • You are allowed to rig the assets to support your animation, this includes using lattices or shapkeys to deform them. If you do we kindly ask you to post those changes to the forum. Please keep any licensing issues in mind!
  • All entrants are encouraged to open a WIP (work in progress) thread in the animation subforum. A WIP thread is not a requirement but it helps to structure once work and improve it. It further helps the community to learn about the process of animation. Above all this contest is ment as a learning experience.

The challenge will last until Monday the 02. March 2009 18:00 GMT followed by one week of voting. Give two to three days for opening the voting thread.
Due to new regulations on this forum people with a low post count are not allowed to post links without moderator approval. If you are in danger of not making the deadline due to this restriction please send a private message with the link to your animation to the host of the contest (musk).

When the voting is finished all votes will be counted and the winner will be announced. If there are no participants after four weeks the challenge will be closed and a new one will be created. If we have only one participant that participant will automatically win.
If there is a tie after the voting is finished the final entry which was posted first wins. The timestamp of the editing dates will be taken into account.
The winner gets to choose the new task. Should he refrain from providing a task or the task is not well suited for the animation challenge then we will provide a new task.
If he desires he may provide a new base file for the animation or improve upon the provided one to suite the needs of the new task.
We invite anybody to send a base file plus task which we might use for future BACs.
Please send a copy of your compressed (activate File -> Compress File in Blender) base file to mailtolanger (@) googlemail (.) com. Please put [BAC] in the subject line.

Please keep in mind that all assets for this challenge should be freely available to all participants.
Unless otherwise stated everyhting is under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 Unported License (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-sa/3.0/).

If you need server space to post animations, try one of these hosts:

https://upload.video.google.com/
http://www.ourmedia.org/
http://www.archive.org/movies/opensource_movies.php
http://gallery.mudpuddle.co.nz/

It is a good idea to post your animation at least to one of the big vidoe hosting sites as some voters have reported problems with privately hosted videos. You may post your video to more then one site. All provided links will be posted in the voting thread.

Best of Luck to everyone and Happy Blending!

P.S.: For those interested I started a git repository for this challenge at http://github.com/musk/bac. If you do not know what git is read up here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Git_(software) and the software can be obtained at http://git-scm.com

…translation with google…

I am very proud that the competition should be done with my rig, I hope that you will not have problems with it.
Some explanation :
layer 1 : FK arms
layer 2 : IK arms
layer 3 : FK legs
layer 4 : IK legs
layer 5 : IK/FK switches
layer 7 : face
layer 8 : body

The rig has a seamless IK/FK switches on arms, to use it, be sure “enable script links” is on, select one arm’s slider and press Shift-LMB, a script will make the transition between IK/FK modes.
If you have problems, I will try to help you.

Kiopaa

Very cool! Thanks Musk and Kiopaa! I’ve downloaded the file and it will not open though. Corrupt file maybe or is it my system?

Edit: Works fine now… nevermind

Placeholder!!! I love this challenge!

WIP thread

One hour left(I think…), so here it is http://www.vimeo.com/3438469. Can’t wait for the next challenge.

Yessss!!! The rig looks great and the task can be fun also (thanks Musk and Kiopaa).

Just in time…my entry!

I think I’ll have a go at the animation challenge this month.

Kiopaa: One quick question… maybe I’ve missed something obvious but when I select the dark purple (light purple when selected) bone extruding out from the ‘fingers’ and move or rotate it the fingers rotate on the incorrect axis. (From the default position in download-able file above) when I rotate them they rotate on the Z axis rather than the Y axis that they should be rotating on.

Here’s my final Entry! (http://vimeo.com/3430238)

Cheers
Cuby

Oops !
There is an error in the .blend file, the action (which allows the fingers to bend) is missing.
I sended by email the correct file to Musk.

Thank you Cuby.

The corrected base file
I added the corrected base file to the top entry as well.

The rig is cool and the character is so funny I couldn’t help having a try during the weekend. Now I’m hooked with the little shot, I’ll show you when I’m done with it

Only half-crit is that sometimes the eyelids go a bit crazy but it might be that I’m just blocking yet (so interpolation is automatic… no arcs).

EDIT: Yay, posted wip thread ! http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?goto=newpost&t=147348

I really need to progress in character animation. Count me in for this one.

Looks cool. I think I’m gonna give this one a try.

I’m in!

Ok, finally here’s my entry in vimeo and youTube. Took a while…

FYI, I created an event for this in the Blender 3D group at Facebook.

musk: I found the eyelids had indeed problems when the head was rotated. I took the liberty to fix the problem (Kiopaa was using IK constraints + CopyRots, I just used a LockTrack which seems to work more reliably) and also added a shapekey and an Ipo driver to the eye pupils (Scale eye controllers to see it).

With this file there are a bunch a shape at the bottom of the rig. Can we hid these. I can’t even figure out how to select them…

I am still having troubles with the fingers. The thumb can be moved freely (also in some odd directions, but thats okay) but the fingers seem to be moving only sideways. And I think they must be able to “close” the hand, so not sideways but up-and-down…or am I mistaken???

Thanks for the answer, I am still very motivated to work on this BAC.

Yeah actually there is something I wanted to comment on that.

The shapes I would put in a hidden layer not just hide them as they were in the original file. Besides, it’s not a good idea to parent them to the rig because in the case you were going to link this character as a group to a different file, the shapes would be automatically imported without the need of parent them.

But if you already parented them then there will be a library conflict and most likely the proxy rig needed in that case will not work.

As for this file (the one hosted in my website), I will delete it as soon as downloaded by musk or whoever manages the contest. I just hosted it for easy access to the fix I made.

Regards !

I am very sorry for all these troubles !

Yes the thumb can move freely.

For the hand, the rig works like that :
Select the bone “CTRL_Doigts.L/R”
- press <R> : the fingers move sideways.
- press <S> : the fingers bend, and you can close the hand.

And you can also scale the thumb bone to curl the thumb…

Tell me, if it works with you.

Here is a fix for the rig made by malefico: /uploads/default/original/3X/6/d/6dbf483473fbe481f82d9344eb1702f3f73bf608.blendd=1233739698. (The link goes to the attachment in the first post.)

Is there a simple way to replace the old rig with the Malefico’s one, without losing the animation I’ve done?
