Blender Car Game test

Please watch this video and comment…and give me some suggestions.

Beautiful setup. You have a great environment going, and it looks like the perfect playground. But what’s the point or goal of your game? If you make it purely a sandbox, that’s boring. What are you going to add? Will we see objectives? Will we see missions? Is it a racing game? Is it a chase game? Is it a Crazy Taxi homage?

Initially i wanted to make it a racing game but i do not know all the logics of a racing game…i am not a programmer…But i can add some simple objectives to it and that is what i am working on.

Mechanics look cool, the environment looks promising, but the shadows look pretty bad in my opinion, you can fix them by baking them / using AO, but then you can’t have dynamic shadows. If you want more comments you should attach screenshots or insert the YouTube video using the film strip icon. :yes:

yes shadow does not look good…but I think it looks better on my 2nd test video…i’ll do baked the shadows… thank you for that film strip icon thing…i did not know about this. :slight_smile:

Blender 2.69 should have a bugfix concerning the sunlamp’s variance shadows not working when the game is running, so you will not need to have baked shadows if you need them smooth.

You should grab a trunk build and give the fixed variance shadows a whirl, there’s a good chance you will not need to give up the realtime shadowing.

Blender 2.68 which i am currently using…& Variance shadows works while the game is running…but the game goes too slow…about 2-3 FPS.

i don’t seem to understand what is a trunk build…What is it…?

For a good shadow, sun: frustum size put in 2 or 3, and reduce the size of the world a 700%, with this is obtained with good shadow, but but causes physical problems, I think you can fix down the gravity. I discovered this trick while, sorry english.

World is already reduced to a great extent. I tried reducing it more that this but this caused some physicals , scripting etc problems…a frustum of around 2-3 will be too small a size.

Ive got a good trick to work with sun lamp and shadows… You can vertex parent the sun to your player car so that it only copies the position and not the rotation of the car (so that the sun would always be aligned to one direction but follow the car around) then you can keep the frustum size small and the buffer size to 1024. As the sun would always be with the car, it will cause only the objects in the kind of ‘draw distance’ to be shadowed.
(btw pm me if you are having problems with vertex parenting or anything related to this :))

Thanks for the giving me the idea of vertex parent…shadow problem has been solved now…this is the most appropriate method…i’ll upload the updated video. :slight_smile:
